emissions info

I bought a 75 F-100 in Flagstaff AZ in January 09, There are no emissions there. Now I will be bringing the truck to Phoenix and wondered if someone would now what if anything I will need to pass emissions here. The truck is 4 wheel drive with a 360 and a 4 barrel edelbrock 3 speed auto. There is no smog pump on it now and I think it just has two glass packs no CAT, VIN # F11YRV25040 Also all the decals under the hood for emission info are gone "does anyone know were to get these" thanks in advance for any help.

Suggest you also ask these questions in FTE's AZ Chapter Forum, you'll get responses from members that are familiar with Phoenix smog requirements.

If Phoenix is anything like what the CA emissions requirements are, ALL the emissions related parts have to be re-installed and be in good working order.

This includes the catalytic converter, EGR valve and related parts, the smog pump and all its related parts, PCV and related parts.

In CA, if any of these parts are missing or not in working order, the vehicle cannot be registered.

If the parts are obsolete (most are) there is no waiver like there once was. It's fix it...or park it.

The emissions decals are obsolete, no longer available from Ford. I dunno if any have been reproduced...or not.

Thanks NumberDummy I did check with the AZ chapter and they think I need Cats and a pump minimum. Do you or anyone else know how to find out what was on the truck originally from the dealer?

It would depend on where the truck was sold new.

Do you know what state the truck was sold new in?

Look on the metal Warranty Plate, which is located on the face of the left door below the latch for the DSO code, post what it is.

1975 F100 sold new in CA (DSO codes 71 or 72): Thermactor Emission (smog pump) / EGR Valve / Catalytic Converter / PCV System / Evaporative Emission System.

The truck is in Flagstaff and I am in Phoenix. I will be bringing it down in a couple of weeks and I can check. But if I remember it is a CA truck. Hopefully I am wrong since they probably had the most junk on them.

Federal 1975 F100s are nearly the same as CA vehicles.

1975 was the first year for the stringer emissions requirements (hence the introduction of the F150). Yours should have cats, evap. system, AIR pump, etc.

I'd worry about what Phoenix tests require first.

In Phoenix, 1975 and up vehicles go through a visual inspection for emissions equipment. You will need the factory emissions equipment installed and operating correctly in order to pass emissions visual. 1974 and older have no visual inspection and only need to pass a exhaust sniffer test.

You can learn more here (AZ environmental quality site)...http://www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/vei/index.html

or

http://www.myazcar.com

One option to avoid emissions is to register the vehicle as a collectable vehicle (25 years or older). This would change your insurance and limit the mileage you put on the truck each year. http://www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/vei/motor.html

There's other ways to get around inspections too. One way is if you have someone who lives in a city other than Phoenix or Tucson and you state that the truck is used at that residence (like a truck used at Lake Havasu for towing a boat).

You may also want to adjust your carb to compensate for the 7,000 ft. drop in elevation.

Sounds like you're going to have a tough time bringing it down to PHX according to Rey...why not just leave it registered in Flagstaff?

Ebay and classifieds can fetch you parts, but...their functional state is questionable.

I've looked up emissions parts. You don't want to know the last list price for some stupid vacuum amplifier or such. As nearly everything has been obsolete since Carter was in the office, they are free to play the pirate.

phoenix is fine with it having the edelbrock carb, they dont check for EGR's and a aftermarket intake and headers is ok also.. i had no problems with my 77 dodge in phoenix, it had edelbrock carb cam and intake and hooker headers.. passed easily.

U shouldnt have a problem, dont change anyhting tell you take it down and have them tests it.

I agree. It may pass as is. But looking at the Maricopa county statistics, 46.1% of all initial tests for vehicles from the model year 1975 fail the initial test (2nd highest fail rate for any model year). http://www.azdeq.gov/environ/air/vei/download/aes.xls

I would make sure it's tuned well before you take it through emissions (without spending $ on adding anything, just basic tune-up stuff). I've failed emissions on my 1974 before, running too rich. Just needed the carb tuned up.

man I am glad I live in a pollution friendly state LOL. Sadly, those laws will likely be everywhere sooner than later.

Thanks for all the info. My tags are good thru Jan 2011 so I dont have to do anything now but I will look into the collectible insurance and see if that will work. Sounds like that will be the easiest way to go since I wont be driving it every day anyways.
