6 Volt to 12 Volt? Gauges??? 1951 F1

I have a couple of questions. Do you have to do something special with the stock gauges during a 6 volt to 12 volt conversion? What size aftermarket gauges fit in the stock holes for the 1951 F1???

It is a problem, going from 6 volt positive ground to 12 volt neg. ground . I have a 51 , my plan was to go in to the ez/wiring site then into there [ DOLPHIN } gauges site . they have a good selection for 48 to 52 ford f 1 . JIM

There are a number of threads about this subject here on FTE.

Also, look on e-bay as there are Dakota Digital Gauges for the 51/52 trucks all the time. Here is a link to some:

Here is an online catalogue for Auto Meter Gauges :

If you want to keep the stock look and convert your Temp and Oil Pressure to Mechanical, I have a gallery that shows how to do it step by step, and it talks about gauge sizes. The stock amp gauge will work fine as is with the 12 volt system, however with the negative ground, you have to run the wire through in the opposite direction. The gas gauge will require a voltage reducer as the gauge and sending unit are matched - you can not use a 12 volt sending unit with this gauge - you have to use the reducer and th estock sending unit, and they work great together.

Lastly, here is a complete thread about wiring in the gauge adapters for the 51/52 instrument panels complete with pictures and drawings....have fun:
