292 won't start

For the first time since the complete rebuild (2005) the 60 won't start. It is the original 292 with bigger heads, dual exhaust, 4bbl (summit street) carb and has a petronics (sp?) electronic ignition and an electric fuel pump. The fuel pump is fine but I am not sure about the points replacement module (petronics). Anyone have one of these fail? The engine will turn over and occasionally fire but won't start. This engine always fires right off, almost instantly. I pulled the #1 plug and it is wet. I do have spark at the coil, (pulled wire and can see arc while the engine is turning over).

Anything you guys can think of I should be checking?

I had a similar situation, wet plugs, no start, in my case went down a few wrong paths (way to many), not sure if I had some spark at the plugs but it was the electronic module (another make, but same idea) that was temperature sensitive, would not start cold, new module, works great.

HMMMMMMMM I swapped the plugs and same thing, it would turn over and over and would not fire. I checked the fuel pressure, it was 7 psi (just right). So I started hooking my timing light induction clamp over each wire while my son turned the engine over to ensure all were firing and it fired once and started up. Runs great just like when I parked it 3 weeks ago. Checked timing it is perfect. So what goes here!? I am glad it is running, but I hate self healing equipment, cause it usually screws up again.

Any ideas ? Could it possible have been vapor locked?

292 wont start reply

I have had the modulator have a bad ground connection. If you have recently painted under the componet it can cause the truck not to start. If the modulator has rust or has gotten wet it can also cause a bad ground connection. I would eliminate this first before buying a new one.

I know what you mean and I’m pig headed enough (by far) to stick with my first idea, it is intermittent open in all those mystery things in the module, (if not just for peace of mind.)

I found some water in the fuel, I bought some premium fuel at a gas station I have not used before and it is in the middle of no where. They likely sell 5 gallons of premium per month, should have bought it at a different place. I think that explains all the symptoms, what do you guys think?

I hope it is the water in the tank.
I had a Pertronix crap out on me in a '55 Fairlane after only a couple of months, I called them up and got a couple of methods to test it and it was bad, however I DID NOT have my sales receipt so they didn't replace it. I stuck points back in and never had another problem.
