Motor Problems.
Hi all, got kind of a bad situation. First off its the 80 4x4 in my sig.1. Been down for probably a year and a half now just sitting in the front yard and have had major problems wrong with it. We worked on it three days ago and it kinda stumbled tried to start. So we unhooked the fuel line BEFORE the fuel filter right as it goes into the carb. No fuel is coming out. So me and my dad put together maybe the mechanical fuel pump. Changed that out still no fuel. Took the cap off of the distributor and noticed it was not spinning on the inside. Pulled the dist. and it spins when you turn the gear on the bottom. Put it back in turned motor over and still didnt spin. 2. So i'm thinking maybe the timing chain is broke but never really heard of that happening? Today I'm going to take the valve covers off to see if the rockers will move or not to narrow it down. 3. The motor turns over just fine. No weird noises or rattling or nothing. That leads me to what ya'll think it is!? I'm thinking putting the 300-6 from my F-100 into it rebuilding the 351M and hot rodding my 2x4 around. But thats if the motor is totally toast. It has always ran like a top no problems. Please help me guys sorry for the long post but it was needed to get all the reasons out to you. Thanks, Taylor

Sounds like you timeing chain broke, I doubt very much if you valves are gonna move, but you better check, to rule it out... Did you look in the dist hole, and visualize the gear?... (inspect)
As far as the fuel issue goes... You can try to put air into the fuel line, first loosen the cap on the tank.. That way if there is any debri stick to the pick up, it will move it away... The rubber diaphram probably dry rotted in the old pump... I am a big fan if capping off the mechanical pumps hole, and putting an electric one back by the tank...

quote] Yes I did, but I could not look pass the little spacer looking thing?? Dont know what its called and didnt see anything. Didnt have a flash light either, but would their not be any weird noises if the timing chain broke?? Even when it turns over?

The distributor gear looks as good as it can possibly get.
And of course the haynes manuel just says how to check tension, doesn't tell you how to get it off. So my next question is how in the world do you get to it. Already taken the fan, harmonic balancer, grill and radiator out, and the 2 belts off, now just waitin for some input.
Thanks guys.

pull the timing cover. might have to drop oil pan too can't remember.cam gear bolts to end of cam and crank gear slides/is pressed on to end of crank and held in time by key way(short square rod inserted in grove.) timing chain is run around the outside of both of these make sure to set engine to top dead center number 1 cylinder install crank gear with alignment dot straight up.wrap the chain under it and over the cam gear then bolt cam gear to cam making sure to align the timing marks on the crank and cam gears with each other while installing.
generic pic. 351w i think should still be same process for all ohv v8 engines
