sending unit not picking up fuel

well my problem is thati have just replaced my sending unit...(after flushing out the tank really good for a rust problem.. well i cleaned up the rust..but now my sending unit dont use all the gas in the tank i put 6 gallons of gas in my truck and after about 40 miles i ran out of gas... i dropped the tank and it still had 2 or 3 gallons of fuel in it and the gauge said almost 1/4 of a tank.. any one have any ideas? there is nothing blocking the flow of fuel..thought when i blow into the line i hear no bubbles and encounter no resistance... so that leaves me to beleive that the pick up tube just is not in the right spot. could bending this tube work or should i add a peice of rubber fuel line hanging down into the tank? or is there sposed to be 2 or 3 gallons left at the bottom of the tank? if so how can i get my float to read this as being empty.. i bent the float arm to what i thought woulda been the right way( up) but it just appears that made it worse...now its reading 1/2 tank any help is greatly apprecaited

If you were ok before you replaced the sending unit, maybe the new one is not correct. Check the resistance of the old and the new, should be the same. I think a piece of rubber hose might add too much weight to the float.

Had another thought, on my truck the fuel pick-up line is separate from the the sending unit. Sending unit only affects fuel gauge reading.

The sending unit / pickup tube needs turning to the proper position.
