Bank no.1,or bank no.2 ?

'02 Escape w/v-6,which is bank no.1,and how does one know ? Does it go by no.1 cyl.or left/right, or front/rear in the case of a transverse engine as in the Escape ? I have a dtc p0430 code, and I really don't want to replace the wrong/all catalytic converters.
Thanks,Butch

Bank #1 is the rear one. Cyl. 1 2 3. Bank 2 is the front Cyl. 4 5 6
Been that way on every V6 Ford I've ever seen.
Code P0430 is for Bank 2 and I hope you had it checked to make sure it's the cat. before you replace it.

As for checking, what would one do,to confirm the converter is at fault?

You would have to have a scanner capable of reading data and look at the up stream and down stream O2 sensors. The up stream O2 should switch between rich and lean and the down stream O2 should be steady. If they both read the same the Cat isn't doing it's job.

There's a pre/post CAT O2 waveform on this page: http://www.omitec.com/us/support/waveforms/

Thanks guys,I am wrestling with this cars emmision system, and up to now it was mainly the check engine light and p0430 code. The other day I was informed of a skip/miss situation. After driving I confirmed this, and found misfire codes on cyls. #1 & #3.So now I have a converter problem on bank two, and misfires (codes p0301 #p0303) on bank one. What's with that?
I cleared the codes, maybe not the smartest move, and the misfire went away.I Also checked O2 sensors, and found sensors 2/2,&2/1 look alike, and 1/1 looks like 2/2,&2/1 and 1/2 is not as intense, or is flatter.I'm guessing this points to sensor 2/2 (bank two downstream?) as telling me the bank two catalytic converter is bad.
Thanks,Butch
