I need to know what to look for to fix my 97 F 250 4X4 5.4L AT truck because the 4x4 won't engage and the light on the dash does not display anymore. This is a shift on the fly, turn the switch 4x4. It will not go into 4 Low either even though I put it in nuetral first etc.

What should I look for?

I know ford had a problem with the shift motors for awhile i would start there.

 

Sounds like a shift motor. Be prepared to spend at least $200 on a new one, unless you get it from the dealer, then you can double that.

 

I would say the shift motor as well, symptoms are the same as I had..
