Train Horn Kit

Hello,

I have an 05 F250 powerstroke crew cab. I bought a train horn kit off of ebay (VIAIR). I already mounted the tank and I have a good idea of where I will mount the horns. I'm left with mounting the compressor. The only place I see is on the frame rail. I have heard some guys mounting the compressor in an ammo can. My question is will the compressor over heat in an ammo can??? Also, what kind of switch should I mount in the cab so that I can turn on the regular horn or light it up with the train horn. If someone can help me out with this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks!!!!

Quint

I have my compressor bolted directly to the frame rail also...Drivers side. Not inside an ammo can. Just have two switches mounted inside, one to control compressor and the other for the horn itself. I can switch between stock and air horn. In your '05, not sure the color of wire in the bundle, cut the horn wire and run it to the switch and back. Tie your air horn into the same switch. That way you have an option of stock or air.

Train Horn Kit

Thanks lostmybeer!!!

Have you had any problems with the compressor being exposed to the elements??? My compressor is a viair and when I was reading through the instructions it noted very clear that the compressor was not waterproof??? I would have had the damn thing mounted already if it didn't say that. Thats when started wondering where could I mount it elsewhere and then I read about the using an ammo can.

I was always under the assumption, that the compressor, and electronics should be protected from the elements. Most of them I have seen are in a neet area under the rear seat. I guess if you dont have a rear seat, then another place simular would be reccomended

mustan6147,

I have a crew cab F250 Lariat, the thing that turns me away from putting it in the cab is how loud the compressor would be. I haven't actually heard it run but I'm thinking it would be kinda noisy. Thats the only reason I want to mount it outside the cab. Maybe I should hook it up just to see how loud the compressor is and then decide from there. I think I'll do that. Thanks for the help.

My compressor is directly under my feet, drivers side frame rail. It gets hit by everything, mud, snow, rain, whatever. Not one problem...knock on wood. Yes, the compressor is loud. Inside the truck is not a very good idea for our application. If I can figure out how to attach a photo from my phone to this section, I will. Quint, how about you PM me your email address and I will send some pics to you. This will give you all kinds of ideas...

I have a Nathan K5LA, dual Viair 480c compressors, and a 20 gallon Firestone tank all mounted inside my toolbox in the bed of my truck.

All I know is I have got to get one. I was driving down the road a few weeks ago behind an F150 that cut loose on the train horns. I almost went into a seizure looking around for a train about to smack into me knowing good and well there were no trains.
