Possible cheap dropping resistor 12v --> 6v ?

I ran across these and wondered if they wouldn't be a good solution to high-amp dropping requirements for 12v conversion (wipers? OD solenoid?). They are 0.9 ohm, and are used on Porsche radiator fans to provide a low speed. As near as I can tell, the fans draw a little over 5 amps. The voltage drop would be right around 6 volts at that current. Stud mount, made like a ballast resistor. Decent price, especially at the boneyard, but Porsches are rare at boneyards and they are mounted w-a-a-y-y deep under the dash.

Ross, I found them on line thru google. The part number has been superceded by 944-616-521-01. Price was $19.27. Listed as 52.5W. Doesn't say cermanic or wire wound. Limited info. It said it was part of the circuit to cool the coolant for 2-3 minutes after turning the ignition off. At that price try one. Use a standoff for cooling. Was used on 924 and 944 various years. chuck

Boy, they were $8 a week ago at Pelican parts, now they're up to $28. I'd bet they ran out of local stock and had to re-order from Germany at new prices. Not a bargain any more!

If you shut the car off while the rad fans are running, they continue to run thru the resistor for a few minutes to cool the car down. Turbo models have a separate electric water pump that also runs thru these after shutdown to keep the turbo oil from coking. They are wirewound encased in ceramic just like a ballast resistor.
