There is a dust seal in the end of the axle tube (that's all), there are needle bearings in the wheel bearing hub that you can see but there are bigger roller bearings that you will never see. The axle is only supported by the hub and the spider side gear in the diff. See my post; "Grease your wheel bearings, pic here."

Hi.
It seems my front axle is too loose. I grab it at the u-joint, and I can move it a lot ... almost able to hit the axle tube wall.
When I hit a bump in the road, it rattles around until it slowly stops .... I think the axle/u-joint is hitting the knuckle and/or axle tube. Locking in the locking hubs helps just a tiny bit.
I removed the brg/hub and axle. I replaced the large seal that seats in the knuckle. The needle bearing in the brg/hub seemed fine and I greased it up. The retaining/snap ring that holds the outer axle end in place seems ok.
Some time ago I replaced the Ford ESOF hubs with Warn Manual hubs after I broke one of the ESOF hubs.
The u-joint seems to be good.... not binding, etc.
I can't figure this out! Lol. How is the axle supported? The gearing inside the differential, the knuckle seal, the needle bearing. Anywhere else? How can I have all this movement in the axle?
I almost feel like fitting a bearing on the inside of the axle tube to hold the axle in place. (Theres nothing there but a dust seal, right?)
It is for sure a rotational banging sound, that is set off by hitting a bump .... not a suspension part doing a single bang.
Any ideas? I need this truck to get to school, and sure don't have the money to go to a dealer.
Thanks alot if anyone has any ideas. Matt
