Gas mileage of a ford 223

I have read in several articles and in various ford advertisments that the 223 was noted for being economical .

What kind of MPG are you guys getting with yours ? especially in the F250 and up .

My 223 is in really good shape and the delivery van should be on the road soon .
I don't think im going to be seeing really great mileage , but you never no .
I am hoping that I might get 12 miles per US gallon or a bit better .
I got a Timken B 100 N axle with 5.83 gears , but the top speed around here is 50 MPH so it should be fine .

Welcome.

I would doubt that with 5.83 gears you are going to get very good mileage, but that isn’t really what I would think old trucks are all about anyway.

Where in B.C. are you?

PD, you should measure your tire diameter, 5.83 sounds tall but undoubtedly you have tires that are over 30". And that 223 needs RPM's to make the HP to push that brick thru the air!

I had a '53 with the 223 and used to get 14 mpg on the interstate at the speed limit, which was 55 back then.

My tires are 30 " .
It figures out to 42 MPH @ 2800 rpm , and 50 MPH @ 3300 RPM .
Should be pretty good , there's only 52838 original miles on the van .
I might be able to meet the 14 MPG .

Old F1 , Im in Powell River .
