F350 V10 engine replacment

Hi,
My 2002 F350 6.8L engine is starting to blow smoke when started in the mornings. I have 181,000 miles on this truck and would like to get prepared for the day when the engine blows up. I found a 1998 6.8L engine for a good price.
Question: Will a 1998 6.8L V10 be a direct replacement for my 2002 6.8L V10? I would like to keep the 2002 exhaust manifolds and intake manifold.
<o></o>
Thanks,
<o></o>
Jeff

Get your heads reworked for your new/used engine... PI heads are what you want... and use your intake and manifolds like you mentioned...

Don't get into too big of a hurry. My dad's 2000 6.8 has way over 200,000 miles, and god only knows how many hours on it! (farm truck). It burns oil, but it still runs perfect. It has burned oil since the day he bought it.

then deal with it..

who knows.. maybe it will run longer then u own it...

i would rebuild the 02 engine before swapping in a 98 version...

Hi Fordndb,
What does PI stand for? Did the 1998 6.8L engine have them?
Do you know if the 1998 heads will bolt up to the 2002 block?

Thanks for the info.

Hi scubadog
PI= Performance Improved Heads from Ford. 98 heads should bolts up but I suggest just refreshing your current heads and use the 98 block...and your 02 upper and lower intake.

I wasn't aware that there were any 1998 year model V10's..... Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it came out in 1999 and they are all PI.

From what I remember, a lot of the motorhome chassis started using the V10's before they started putting them in the trucks.

I believe it was 1997 that the V10 came out in the E-series vans/cutaways and chassis, and the motor stayed the same through the 99 superduty; I believe they were 265hp. 2000-2004 V10's got the PI heads.

That would be messy! The electronic engine controls are different on the 3-valve engines. The cam phasers are electronically controlled, and the fuel and ignition tables would also be different. You'd have to pull the brains as well as the engine from the donor vehicle and try and make it all work...

At 420 ft-lbs and 310 HP, the 2V engine's no slouch..

That is a deal!!!
I would still run the old motor in it tell it dies.
It may have 10 years left, you can run it a long time like that.
how much oil is it burning?
