Dang, that must be one heavy surfboard!
Go to the 2008-2009 6.4 PowerStroke diesel forums and read all you care to about MPG's. There are 3 things the new diesels get constant griping about.
1. MPG's
2. DPF regeneration perceptions
3. Radiator/Cooling system (including EGR coolers)
All in all, it's a great truck and engine. That pesky surfboard won't slow you down any more.

I have a 08 1-ton kings ranch, I hatted the milage until I had 42,000 miles on it ...at 73mph in curse control on the freeway mpg was 22-26 mpg,at around town 9-12 and or.....now at 46000 miles I'm getting 16.5 around town and I have a heavy foot some times compaired to my wife,BUT boy does it pull a load !!! mpg is getting better but not fast enough...

Big trucks can do a lot of damage in a collision, but they are actually LESS protective of occupants than most modern cars.
A BMW 3 series wagon with the TDI would be PERFECT for your use! More comfortable, safer, and more than double (maybe even triple?)the mpg!
