I have also read other accounts of problem towing an Escape and would not do so at this point, with the possible exception of a 2WD Escape with a stick shift trans.
Although it looks like Ford is replacing transmissions (and sometimes more than once) for owners who tow, I would not want to go there...
If their Escape is 2WD, I'd go with a front wheel dolly...

Good luck,

I don't think that anybody that has a transmission replaced after flat towing has tried it again using the revized lower ATF level yet.
What gets me that even Ford Techs have overfilled the transmissions!!

Based on prior experience (and being something of a skeptic and pessimist by nature), I am thinking that if there are problems towing with the trans overfilled, that running a pint less fluid (or whatever) is not going to solve the problem for serious long distance towing.

I own a automatic 2009 Escape and we purchased it to be our flat tow vehicle behind our RV. We purchased the Escape on June 3rd, 2009. So far we have placed the 6F35 transmission 2 times at Ford's expense. We followed all of the procedures for flat towing to the absolute "T". The low trans fluid between the min mark and the 1st hole did not make a difference. We will not tow this vehicle again. The Hybrids have a belt driven transmission and do not have this problem I have been told. We really like the vehicle but we will not be inconvenienced again by flat towing it.

It isn't a belt but a planetary drive system with three inputs - the gas motor and two electric motor/generator sets. IIRC the 4WD version of the hybrid has to be flat-towed only.

Like other RVers, I bought my 2009 Escape AWD (in Feb)specifically because it was 4 flat towable. I needed a snow vehicle and I needed a towable and I preferred a Ford behind my Ford motorhome.
I towed twice at 500 miles each and drove it in between. I had my 7500 mile service and towed twice more at 500 miles each. I ran it between gears as newly recommended. I've driven it a lot since (now at 11,200)
This morning I noticed an oil drop on the drive and looked under the hood. The tranny fill tube looked oily/dusty. I checked the level and it was off the stick low. So, I called the dealer and had it towed in.
A weird thing: when I pulled the tranny dipstick, there was a 1/2" x 1/2" x 1/8" (rough dimensions) of off-white semi-rigid plastic foam/sponge wrapped around the stick. I saved part of it, and sent the rest to the service tech (with the vehicle).
I really like the Escape, it gets me almost 30 mpg on a trip, has nice space, and handles very well. It is supposed to snow tonight, so I am going to miss it. But, at this moment I sure am glad I still have my 1999 Saturn wagon.
