Fuel gauge

Hello
I had a question on the fuel gauge on a 70 bronco. At present the gauge does not work. It has duel tanks. The wiring looks good. It seems kind of odd that both sending units in the tanks could be bad- is it possible the switch in the dash (front /rear) could be the issue? Also can anyone tell me when sitting in the driver seat- looking forward- which way should the handle point (for the manual fuel tank switch at your feet) to run the rear tank?

tank switch on my 68 goes to rear tank right point
front tank left point
off down or up..

to be honest...this can be changed real easy so dont know if that a good
direction to follow..

sometimes i get no readings unless i really fidget with the indicator switch on the dash.
so
it works real well on back tank---once i get it to make good contact..so i never switch it ane keep front tank full for back up.
my truck is bone stock.

You can ground the wire at sending unit and gauge should go to full to verify wiring/guage are good.

if I remember right- the sender has a plastic plug that cover two posts coming out of the sender- One goes to a frame ground and the other to the gauge. So I can unplug- and run a jumper from the plug to the frame? Sorry- I am electrically challenged.

My 68 is a 100 miles from here and i flat dont remember except that it does have a plug..
But that makes sense in that the float would make or break the conection by a little or a lot..
Know chebbies are reverse to fords.... as to what the sending unit does.

put in a new sending unit some years ago and it lasted like 4 days. took it back out and the float which was plastic had cracked...
so
put a cork in it and its been working fine for 4 yrs.
