Heres some prices We've paid for dana 60's...
My brother just scored a deal. he found a 1988 460 f250 with a lift somewhere around 8-10" and a dana 60(balljoint) front fitted to it for 800. the guy was moving and blew the engine.
I had bought a 1990 f350 460 from cook county (chicago) parks department for 1400 off ebay. The highest bidder under me was a junkyard. I bought it for the kingpin dana 60 and it was incredibly rusty but when I picked it up it had new exhaust and cat from the manifold back and brakes...not just new pads, new drums rotors calipers lines everything I just put a battery in it and drove it on the trailer. One of the few ebay wins that was better than expected. they had it in the shop evewry 2k miles for whatever it needed. I was offered almost 3k for it back here in Omaha and let it go after getting a year out of it. Only sad part about the story is an hour after paypalling the money in for the f350, A wrecked 1998 E450 ambulance with 30k actual miles popped up on Ebay and I didn't have the cash to bid. I hooked my buddy up and he won the auction for $1200. It had a 7.3 powerstroke and the OD tranny had the parking brake which meant it was a 4x4 tranny. BOOOO missed on that one.
I had been looking for a dana 60 for my 4x4 van and was wanting to put a diesel in it too.
I had looked at alot of dana 60's like yours and alot of them were incomplete missing the brakes and steering and some the hubs. By the time I was done I would have spent close to 2k on one and I could have bought a brand new dana 60 through Quigly for around 3k. $900 might sound like alot with some going for $500- $700 in bad shape but if yours are complete I think that's a fair price.
When I bought that 1990 f350 I was thinking the D60 kingpin axle with the steering and springs and all was worth at least a grand -$1200 and I was happy to have it.
hope that gives you some faith in your price.
another thing I remember is there was a guy in Jersey that had a bunch of f450 dana 60 fronts and was getting them shipped to anywhere in the us for $250 airfreight but it had to be crated. He claimed airfreight was about half to 2/3rds of truck freight through old dominion or yellow.

I bought one complete hub to hub including brakes, sway bar, etc, for $500... I've seen other around here for $500-600. I think the northeast probably had a lot more ordered to handle snow plows than anywhere else, which would explain the abundance.

Hello Fellas, I'm pretty new to this and it has been years since I have done any automotive work. I recently bought a 75' F250 4x4. It needs a ton of work on the front axle: Bearings, knuckle seals, etc, lol. I've talked to several people and of course get different opinions. As well, I'd love to add true power steering instead of assist. I, too, have heard of going with a 78'-79', but I have had a 4wheel drive shop run something else by me. They say that if it was their truck, they would put in a 93'-97' Dana 60 in. Preferably a 93'-94'. Does anyone have any imput on this subject?? I do appreciate any advice. I'd like to know the best way to go before I start spending.

 

Those later axles are easier to come by and are a lot cheaper, but the Dana 60 changed from kingpins (stronger) to ball joints in 1992 (not as good). Also the the spring pad spacing changed in 1980 so 1980 and up Dana 60 will not simply bolt on- only the '79 and down will. You would have to move your springs outboard. If your are planning on going with a coil sprung front then a later model axle could work out just fine.

A 4 wheel drive shop could make lots of money trying to fab in a later model D60

 

hi im new to this forum and actually joined because of my current question that i can not answer no matter how much research i have performed. i have stumbled upon a 1978 ford dana 60 front axle in immaculate condition locally for $250 which is an amazing deal for a complete axle and i was wondering if it would bolt straight up into my 1984 diesel f250 with out any modifications? and if not how difficult would it be to to modify it? sorry if i intruded on someone elses thread it just seemed like the people in this thread really know what there talking about and i may buy the axle today if i get the right response please help a fellow ford owner out i would really appreciate it.

 

Well I would definitely get it but not sure if it will fit under your truck. But you could sell it for more than double. Then find one that will bolt right in to your current truck.

 

so i should pounce on that deal huh? well hopefully someone here has done this swap and can help but thank you for your reply and i was thinking about flipping it if it wont bolt up or maybe trade someone with a late 80s solid dana 60.

 

No it won't bolt under your truck. The spring pads are too close together.
