97 Expedition - Starter engages when vehicle is off and no key in it.
Not sure if I need a mechanic or an exorcist. Problem started when wife noticed rear windscreen wiper going even though vehicle was off and no key in it. Then driving the vehicle later that day instrument panel lights kept coming on like ignition was just turned on and rear wiper and driver's power window only worked when they felt like it. When vehicle turned off acessories like radio, windsheild wipers etc keep running and chime comes on for key in ignition when door is opened even though key has been removed. Finally vehicle tried to start itself even though ignition was off and no key in it. If moved key to run position vehicle will actually start without moving key to start position and will keep running. Once running the starter continues to try and engage (intermitently not steady) and vehicle will only quit if battery terminals disconected (does not quit immediately even then but starter engaging seems to stall it).
Removed and tested ignition switch and it is fine. Open to suggestions...

You don't live by an ancient indian burial ground do you ? If so, then I'd say it's native american spirits that are the cause of your problems.......... Just kidding, I agree with heymrdj on it being your GEM, there's been many threads written on this problem. Doing a search on the subject will bring you wealth of information.

Thanks,
I agree... GEM is the one component consistent in all of the wiring diagrams that have the compents currently possessed by evil spirits (except ignition system). Pulled fuse box and GEM... no trace of any water. Is there anyway to test the GEM ($480 CDN for a new one) and I hate to replace it is not the cause of the problems? Is there anything else besides water that would cause the GEM to fail? Would also hate to replace it only to have new one fry because I hadn't taken the time to correct that cause of the failure?

New gem old problems
Okay, put in a new GEM. Vehicle good for half a day and problems have started again. Driver window works some of the time. Instrument panel lights flash on and off. No rain in two days. Disconnected battery so vehicle does not try to start itself again in the middle of the night.
What else besides mosture casn cause a GEM to malfunction like this?
Is it possible the GEM is not faulty but a shaort somewhere else is causing it to malfunction?
Hooked my OEBII Reader up to it and took it for a drive. No codes.
Any advice?
