94 F150 + fuel problems + strong odor of old gas/ but it's a daily driver
I'll try to condense this narrative. Managed to get the fuel filter replaced yesterday. Took about 10-12 times, maybe more, of powering up the pump to refill the lines. Finally cranked, idled very erratically, stopped. More priming. Cranked up, ran fairly smooth for about 20 seconds. Stopped. Primed several more times, cranked and run pretty good. 3 hours later, same senario. Went out this am, finally cranked, drove about a mile, stumbled several times, cleared up. Went on up the road, switched it off, came back about 5 minutes, cranked up. Another 1/2 mile, off, cranked, headed home. Just about there and it died like it was running out of gas. Not much pressure at the Schraeder valve, and the gas smells extremely old, nasty. Fuel filter change was long, long overdue. I have been driving this truck daily for about 6 years, so gas has been consumed about as quick as I put it in there. So where is this old, foul smelling gas coming from? Any chance the element in the filter disintegrated and plugged something up? I am in a real spot here, and any help is greatly appreciated. Oh yes, just replaced pump, last year. Pump cycles on every time you turn on the switch. What gives? Incidentally, mpg, if correct is now about 9mpg, down from an average of 15.5.

Paul, thanks for the reply. No, I was extremely careful to hook up the fuel filter properly, it was marked with "IN" on one end, and had an arrow indicating the flow direction.
That having been said, I have been searching/reading over in the "Fuel Injection" forum, and believe I may have an answer for the sudden, drastic loss of MPG, and the old fuel. The pump does not work in the rear tank, so I haven't used it in several years. Is it possible for the front tank to fill the rear? If so, this could be it. This is a 94 F150, 4.9. Where would this check valve be located? And, would it be possible to service it, as I am really short on cash and time, right now. Thanks for any help.
