rear axel for 1954 F350

I am looking for a modern rear axel for my 1954 F350. My truck has a custom steel flatbed with dually wheels. I want to keep it dually. I found a nice Dana 70 rear axel out of a 1985 F350 cab & chassis, but the overall width is 4" more than the stock axel. This is the narrowest axel I could find at the wrecking yard, and it will bolt in with no modifications. Is a pre-1979 F350 axel narrower?
