I should hit 175,000 miles on my 2005 within the next week or so.
Still have not had a single repair aside from a rear axle seal at about 110,000 miles. I mean nothing. No transmission repairs. No engine repairs. I don't remember even having to replace a blown bulb. Nothing......
Still have original serpentine belt (probably not smart but it still looks fine)
You get to the point where you think it will just go forever and nothing will ever break.
Brian, its funny, but rite before I read this I was going to post a thread asking how your truck was doing.I'm now driving 120 miles round trip a day, 5 days a week.600 miles a week and i'm almost at 44K miles.I'm now doing 5K mile OCIs instead of 3K.The powertrain warranty runs out at 50K miles so I need to crawl under there and see if theres anything wrong or leaking.

I am NOT anal about it though. I follow a reasonable maintenance schedule.
5K mile OCI
Drop the transmission pan every 30K-40K miles, replace the filter then add fluid to fill it back up.
Plugs every 75K miles.
Change the brake fluid and fuel filter every 30k miles or so.
I get a good deal of satisfaction doing my own maintenance and knowing standard maintenance is all that is needed.
Maybe most of all, proving once again 5K OCI, and not using a full synthetic oil will allow an engine to last as long as it is going to last.
At least in Alabama.
At 45K miles i'm going to have my tranny flushed. At 24K miles I bought a new pan and added a 1/4" thread o let for draining purposes.I changed the filter at that time.I just recently drained the pan again at 35K miles.I change the fuel filter every 15K miles. How do you flush your brake fluid?

I take a short piece of tubing and siphon 90% of the fluid out of the reservoir. I then add new fluid to fill it up.
Next, I bleed each caliper (while keeping the reservoir topped off along the way) until fresh fluid comes out.
Presto - entire system now has fresh fluid.
Generally takes about 20 mins with my son being the "brake pedal masher" and "fluid topper offer".

So you don't recommend using a synthetic motor oil for longevity? Too, wut sort of maintenance should be done for the manual tranny and what intervals? I'd appreciate any advice as this is the first manual I've owned long enough to have to do maintenance to my past have all been leased vehicles. Thanx in advance.
Hi - welcome to FTE and our little corner of the FTE world. Glad you found us!
I have owned 2 F150s with the 4.2.
Both got 5K OCI.
I used 10W30 in the 2000 and 5W20 in the 2005.
Either truck could have used either oil.
Total mileage = 350,000 between the two. Neither burned oil, leaked oil, smoked, or showed any other signs of any oil related problems.
The lines have blurred a little in recent years between conventional and synthetic. Today's "non-synthetic" oil is as good as you are likely to ever need. The 5W20 is an especially good oil.
Plenty of reading in the Oil and Lube forum if you want to venture over there.
But, to answer your question, no I do not think you need synthetic oil - especially so living in the south (no extreme cold).
As far as changing the fluid in the 5 speed manual, here is something I posted about 5 years ago: http://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/20...a-5-speed.html
About every 30,000 - 40,000 miles if memory serves me correctly.
Wow Brian, that is awesome! I also believe it is because of the maintence that you follow is why your trucks run as well as they do.
My sons 99 F-150, 4.2 auto has 160K and seems to be great. I changed plugs and wires and maf sensor ( all Motorcraft) . The rest of the changes are personal (shocks & sway bar) or normal wear & tear. Oh, the starter failed a month ago. Weird but we can"t fault it.
I also do oil at 5K, and use GTX High Mileage and have no real problems. We were thinking about synthetic because of the HEAT down here in South Flori-duh. But I am almost afraid to change; if it aint broke.....
BUT... We have not changed the trans fluid. I guess I need to do that soon. Can you recommend a fluid? Truck is a daily driver with no towing.
I am actually looking for a F-150 for MYSELF but I want extended cab with the 4.2 & auto. I'll find one....
99% sure the M5OD calls for Mercon ATF.
I remember buying Advance Auto brand Mercon when I had my 2000.
Some guys switch to synthetic. No surprise: I never did and never saw the need.
Some guys swithch to heavier "gear lube". No surprise: I never did and never saw the need.
The M5OD gears are splash fed so I could never feel good about a heavier gear lube working in the long run. Beside, I never had any problem using what the manufacturer spec'd.
You can verify in your Owner's Manual and then (if my memory is correct) grab yourself some Mercon ATF and you should be in good shape.
