How high is high mileage on a 5.4 3v
I found another 5.4 3v in an 04 crew cab. It has a slight tick on start up but levels out real quick and runs smooth and strong.
My question is a truck with 73k miles has a slight tick and one I drove with 80k had slight blue smoke on start up.
How many miles is everyone getting out of the 5.4 3v if they maintain it well? Anyone on here have testimony on a real high miler yet?
I had a 99 5.4 that had 150k+ and ran as good as the day I bought it with 10k miles. I just want to make sure the new 5.4 3v is just as strong before I bite off a little more cash this time.
Thanks,
Rod

Higher miles
I don't know if you'd call it high mileage but a friend has an 05 Screw 4x4 5.4 Styleside shortbed with a lift kit and it's sitting around 80K (best I know), no ticking, no smoke or anything else out the ordinary. About the only issue he has that I know of is the front tires are wearing off the outside edge of the front tires.
My 07 only has 23K so it's got a ways to go before it's considered high mileage.

The 3 valve engines came out in '04, so there are some with greater than 120K miles, but most folks are just now around 100K. If the 2 valve engines are any indication I would consider 150K miles high mileage in these trucks. However, with regular and preventive maintenance 225K in the 2 valves is not uncommon.

I work for a transit organization and we have 5.4, v10s,6.0, and 7.3s. Our 2008s have 60k on them and they have been working for about 8-9 months without a hiccup. The 5.4 has 150k with nothing wrong with it. Our 2007 has 120k.... good to go except they keep hitting things with it. I finally got rid of the 6.0 because it was running about 3000 dollars every 2 months in repairs. Stay away from 6.0.
Then we have a 7.3 with about 330k and it has been in service since 2005. You cant kill it. I really does not even burn oil. By the time we retire the old girl, it should have 400k.

I agree with all the above. Im at 115,000 miles and loven ever mile of it. The main thing that I noticed that hasn't been mentioned was the trans. I do a trans kit every 60 k miles. The magnet was solid just like a donut. I also changed the rear differential twice, feul filter I think 5 or 6 times. I guess it all comes down to how well it was maintaned. I will never get ride of this truck. I will buy another motor before buying a new truck. When I'm finally done I will post pictures. Many changes.

I dont see there being any problem these engines going well over 300,000 if well serviced. Heck if you want to keep your truck long enough probably could get a million out of it. Todays engines are so much better in build quality that 200,000 is nothing. Many people report miles that high and above with other engines. I was looking at the v10 forum and they are reporting 500,000 plus on airport trucks.
