Factory turbo

Hey guys, My 94 250 is factory turbo according to the vin decoder but its a garret. Is this likley to be the original as I read about ats, banks, and hypermax but never garret?

Just to clarify, if you need it, Garrett makes the turbo Ford and ATS used in the turbo "kit" (for lack of a better term).

Does the ats aftermarket kit also use the garret and if so would you not be better off going direct to garret for kits. As far as t3/t4 hybrid what is the difference. My mate had a t4 on his 4 cyl laser so I wouldn't have thought big enough for 7.3L. Laser did go like stink though.

Just have to say this is the first time I've seen a picture of your truck. Looks really nice.

Saying T3/4 hybrid or T4 turbo is like saying "ute", or "truck", they all generally do the same thing but come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes. Your engine is also only going to about 3300 RPM and only takes 10 PSI before the benifits start to drop off so you don't really need a huge turbo.

If you are after a rebuild kit then those differences in trim don't matter. A simple T3/4 rebuilt kit is all you need and you don't have to look to ATS or directly to garrett to get one. If you need specific parts like a compressor wheel or housing, then you will need to get the exact parts, but again a well stocked garrett dealer should be able to get them.

The Factory turbo IDI only made about 10 Hp more than the naturally aspirated IDI of the era (190 vs 180) but but they are capable of much more if you open up the exhaust. 250 Hp and 500 Ft/lbs of torque is possible with those engines.

FYI, of all the turbos used in various, most are the same design and are made by only a couple different manufacturers.

For example, dimensional aspects, nomenclature and flanges from Garrett turbos have been used on many other models of turbos, and Garrett lookalikes are made by a few companies.

Banks used Mitsubishi turbos in their kits, for some reason.

I'm not sure what Hypermax uses but I'm pretty sure they are Garrett turbos or at least Garrett lookalikes.

ATS used Garretts for a long time, they have recently switched to Auroras which are probably pretty closely related to some sort of Garrett turbo, but I haven't seen one up close to really know.

If you went to Garrett you would only get the turbo, none of the associated plumbing, brackets etc.
That's where ATS comes in.

Thats what I like about this forum, ask a stupid question and get three brilliant answers in return. David85, Cheers for the compliments. I am still learning to drive this forum so as soon as I can I will get more photo's. Dodge commented on the front bar in another thread so I will get some close ups of that as well. All I need to know then is how to put them in a post.

A tad more on the stock Ford turbo.

The IDI engine turbo system is a redesigned ATS turbo system.
The only thing Ford changed was the turbo outlet flange and downpipe, probably due to clearance issues.

To install the ATS system with a 3" downpipe, mods to the firewall (bending the cab seam) are required to make room for the downpipe.
The other option is a body lift.
Either one works so the downpipe does not hit and vibrate against the firewall.

Using the photo gallery here in FTE or an outside photo hosting site, then copy and paste the link to the photo in the post is how you post pictures.

heehee, down under trucks with that kind of armor are farily common. Their "deer" are a little bigger than ours LOL.

This seems to be above average though. I love the way the front guard is tied onto the running board to protect the front fender. Unlike the wimpy "accessories" you buy from the dealer on this side of the rock, this setup will actually repel a bit more than just a small sapling. Everything seems to be made of aluminum too so rust isn't a problem.

Very nicely done.
