gryphon programmer

i'm thinking about ordering one of these, but would pretty much only run the economy tune (don't want to use premium gas). I have an AEM brute force intake and Borla exhaust on an 06 FX4. Do you think there will be that much of a difference over the stock tune in terms of economy and performance?

also, what do you do when you take the vehicle in for emissions testing?

It will definately help with transmission shifting and throttle response. There won't be any breakneck performance gains felt, but it will modestly improve power. As for fuel economy, I can't say for sure. It should help some, but that'll depend upon how and where it's driven. I would put the stock tune back in for emissions testing at least a few days in advance.

If you're just looking for a stock economy tune, I would suggest the Edge programmer.
No need for the Gryphon... which is just the edge tuner but slightly modified to run complete custom tunes.

thanks guys, but what about the intake and exhaust i've done? I thought that's why I would need a Gryphon over an EDge?

The Edge is designed for a stock intake, you risk running lean without custom tunes..what year is your truck? seems to me the worst years for running lean were the 04-05's The Gryphons canned tunes are close to the Edge's..but Bill has tweaked them a little on the Gryphon. Not sure what the price difference is on a new Edge and new Gryphon..if comparable, i would get the gryphon, that way you're covered down the road if you want custom tunes. My 08 is stock engine wise and i still got a couple of custom tunes for my Gryphon.

I have an Edge Programmer as well as a Volant Intake and Magnaflow Exhaust. I've been running level 2 (Tow Program) with no issues. That being said I still plan to spend the cash and convert my Edge to the Gryphon for the custom tunes to really take advantage of my mods.

I forgot to add something until i seen your post. Level 2 does run a little richer and that will help compensate for the CAI....and yep, the Gryphon will make the mods work great together.

tylus has a good reputation on FTE. tylus has a good reputation on FTE.
I suggest you talk with all of the other tuners out there before you settle on PHP

I've been attempting to contact them since December about basic questions. From my old F-150 with the Supercharger to my newest vehicle (Expy).

Despite several e-mails and multiple forum posts on their website, I HAVE NEVER GOTTEN A REPLY

the other guys are more than willing to answer questions and earn your business. unlike PHP. I thought they were the best thing since sliced bread since they modify a Edge...but I find it hard to recommend a company who can't even return e-mails.
Mike Troyer is probably the most in-demand Tuner for the Ford F series...and he is able to do this

same with VMP and 5 Star. good customer support and very knowledgeable

That's odd..I PM'd Bill on this forum just yesterday and a few days ago and I got responses within a day each time. I can't speak for his tunes but I've heard nothing but good things and so far communication has been great.

Hey there! I sure did miss your post in May, but around that time, we thought I had food poisoning, and I had emergency surgery later that month to remove my gallbladder and an avocado pit-sized gallstone! It was a rough month for us since I wasn't in the office and Bill was holding down the proverbial fort by himself. Sorry that your post wasn't addressed at the time, but Bill was being pulled 18 different directions. I did, however, see your latest post from four days ago, and if you check, you'll see that I addressed it -- four days ago. I see that you haven't been on since August 2nd, which is why you didn't know. I also did a search for your name in my e-mails inbox, and I don't have any from you. If you have a minute can you PM me the e-mail address you sent it from -- either here or on our forum -- please? I want to check up on it and be sure that they came through or if it's a matter of them being sucked into Cyberspace. Thank you!

Go for the Gryphon, it is comparable pricewise to the Edge out of the box and if the custom tunes are as good as I read they are (just got my Gryphon a couple weeks ago so I am still running the canned tunes), it is a no brainer. It has been described as feeling the same very noticeable improvement going from canned to custom tunes as it was to go from stock to canned tunes. I am VERY happy and was surprisingly impressed with the noticeable difference the tuner made in the driveablility of my truck.

As far as your CAI, you will get mixed opinions on the necessity to run a custom tune with it. That being said, my preference would would be to err on the side of caution and run a custom tune.

I have had nothing but a positive customer service experience with Power Hungry Performance as have many others. Tylus' experience noted above is the first of its kind I have read about.
