Hair In Muffler

How about that Title??? LOL

OK...All joking aside. My boy's, there friends, and friends, friends come to me for trouble shooting, and my son has stumped me with this one. So here is my question.

My son has been complaining of hair coming out of his muffler (aftermarket) I thought he was joking, and said maybe an animal got in there since its so big?? He took his muffler off, and banged it out on the ground, (for lack of better description). It looked like hair from a sink drain clog... He says what the H___ is that? I couldnt answer it. This muffler isnt a thrush or anything with packing... Where does this come from.
I think it is a magna flow? or other name brand, stock exhaust sytem. (no stacks)

He has a 2002 7.3 liter 4x4 in a F250 it has 80,000 miles on it.

IIRC, My MBRP muffler is packed with a stainless steel "wool" between the baffle pipe and outer shell. I think most of the diesel performance mufflers are made this way. It seems odd that it would be coming out unless the baffle pipe was loose inside.

What do you think...

When he banged out the muffler, he is claiming improved power. I response is

"If an animal got in there, and you smoked him to death, it would cause a restriction"

I was unaware of packing use anymore, I figured it was all steel baffling.
I am going to get his exact muffler, and then get intouch with the MFG to see.

His truck sounds louder now to. Of course this stands to reason either way, dead animal, or baffleing material.

Good one. I would get the ball and dissect it or maybe even send in a hair sample for analyzing.
Possibly DNA tests can tell species and family group.LOL

A few years back I got a magnaflow from my buddy. He upgraded to a 4 inch system and let the 3.5 inch magnaflow sit in his barn. First startup after install it blew out a bird skeleton.

I had a LIVE SNAKE drop out of the dash onto the floorboard in my E-250 van.

Mama, in the front seat, was NOT happy , and you know what that means!

Wink

At work recently had a stock muffler on a trailblazer barf its guts and it did look a lot like human hair. White & gray & stringy.
It was hanging out of the pipe we pulled it out and it was louder.....

I was in the Borla Factory here a couple of months ago and they still use the thread type packing in their mufflers as well as the steel wool type media

It has to be some kind of fiberglass-type of material for sound deadening.
