Windshield wipers/washer

Windshield wipers/washer
Hi,
I borrowed my dad's '89 F250 the other day (I will buy it if I can get the problems worked out of it). It was raining and he warned me about the wipers. At first, the wipers worked... but only with the switch on high... even though the speed was like it was on slow. Also it wouldn't park at the bottom when switched off but parked wherever it was when switched off. Later, when I was returning it to him, it was raining heavily and the wipers worked on high but would stop in the arc. Then restarted after a few seconds only to stop somewhere in the arc again. Luckily I only had patches of bad rain to go through.
I went to his house today armed with the information on wipers from Phoneman91 and tried the wipers again before working on them. They were the same as when I took it home last. Start... stop... start... stop... all in the process of one arc. And they would park where they were when I turned the switch off. I did the things mentioned in the article titled "No intermittent wipers - wipers will not park after using washer?? No cost fix!!". It seemed to fix the erratic wiper problem. They would start when turned on, and run until turned off and park at the bottom of the windshield.
However, they still only work on "high" and they are still only running like they are on "low". Only two things that I can think of:
1. Switch in cab needs replaced, or
2. There were 3 wires coming out of the bundle of wires that led to the motor that went to a plug/receptacle that was not plugged in. I did not find anything to plug into it.
Also, the washer does not work at all.
Anyone who is still reading all this have any ideas?
Thanks,
Psycho72

My washer does not work either. It was strongly suggested that I have a bad ground somewhere for that but I have not been able to find it. Maybe that will help with you with that piece. As far as the other stuff, I was going to suggest you read the piece by phoneman, but it looks like you already got there.

Well, my wipers acted like yours when the motor was bad.
Judging by the fact your wipers are messed up and the lack of the windshield washer fluid spraying, id have to guess they may be related in that your switch may be bad.
Either that or A) Your wiper motor is bad and B) your windshield washer pump is bad/or plugged.

here's a trick that i found fixes most washers. unbolt your washer tank and unplug the washer, with the plug removed you will see 2 metal prongs on the back of the washer motor. simply take a pair of pliers and bend these prongs a little further apart from each other, so they fit tighter in the plug. now plug it back in and see what you get.

Nah, thanks for the suggestion, but I tried that first because I suspected bad connection. Start with the easy stuff, ya know. When that didn't work I put a multimeter on the ends of the wiring and discovered I have no power there when the button is pushed. I will probably get around to spending more time trying to track this problem down sometime in the future. It's just that it doesn't bother me enough at the moment and I have other cats to skin first. When I figure it out I will let you all know what it was, though.

I've had a number of bigger problems I've been chasing for the past months that I think are pretty much nailed down now. We have two feet of snow on the ground now so I'll be waiting until the thaw to tackle this again. I'm pretty sure it's a ground issue which is going to be a pain and something I don't want to do in the cold. I'll post something when I have some results. Good luck with your problem. You can pull the pump motor and connect it via a couple of jumpers straight to the battery to check it.
