Has anyone built there own topper, cap, camper shell?

I had planned on getting one but becasue of a boat engine problem the money I was going to spend on went to the boat shop. I was thinking I could build a fairly nice one out of plywood for now and get a good one later.

Was thinking no windows no frills just the door in the back.

Anyone have any plans for one?

Suggestions on materials?

I was thinking 1/2 inch plywood

go to craigslist and find someone selling a cheep cap. you gotta watch out with biulding your own. some states you will need to have a winow in the back. check your mirror laws. see if you need your rear view.

Oh my God, dude! Do not put a plywood cap on that fine looking truck. Maybe if it was a '78 with 3 colors of primer, but an '08?! Maybe a used cap, even if you have to spray to match, but 2x4's and plywood? NO, NO, NO!!!

OK craigslist is a joke I live in Juneau ALASKA few people know about it and I have been looking for three months and have wanted ads up everywhere and not seen one anywhere

I build cabinets and furniture on the side so this is not going to look like a POS I started thinking after I posted that about using 1/4 plywood instead then covering it with red cedar T&G it would be heavy but WTF I have a F350

no window law in AK I actually have the rear view mirror turned up out of the way becasue I am usually towing something when driving the truck so I don't use it anyway. Don't need it got them, big honk'n tow mirrors =)

so your gunna spend how much on this? you could probly buy one. i suppose you could make it look ok. i would think a wooden tonno cover would look better though if you wanted to make something for it.

I'm thinking $300-400

Why not buy one.

OK shipping alone (JUST SHIPPING) to get one here $1100 (One thousand One Hundred not a typo)!

need room for three German Shepherds a plywood topper painted and built right has got to look better than three dog kennels crammed in the back

Don't think I am going to put a POS on my truck I am a fairly good carpenter and I have two friends who are one is a cabinet maker and the other build furniture and they both owe me so this is going to be a nice looking topper and 5 or 6 coats of gloss black paint to finish it off.

i never doughted you on your carpentry skills man. just wouldnt look right being a brand new truck with kitchen cabnets on it. it would look better i think if you finished it in knotted pine with semi gloss poly on it.
