Need a Radiator for my 49 F-1 with 302

I'm in the market for a radiator I can fit into my 49 F-1 with a 302/C6 with minor fabrication. The 302 is an '85 that has a driver's side water pump outlet. I found a three row on Ebay that is custom made for a 60-65 Falcon with a 302. It is 18 1/2 wide x 21 1/4 tall (item number 130321600091). Has anyone here used a Falcon radiator in a 48-52 F-1? It doesn't appear to have a transmission cooler installed but I intend to use a separate cooler for the C6 anyway. It looks like it will fit from the picture, the size is about right, and the price of $199.95 including shipping seems reasonable. I'm too cheap to buy a Walker and I don't like aluminum radiators. Appreciate any comments...

The early falcon radiator is probably the same as the early mustang which is a little small. I have a 68 mustang radiator in mine and is available in 2 and 3 row. A little wider than the falcon and has a trans cooler built in. Mine is used but you should be able to buy it new for the same price as the falcon one I would think. If you want the stock look can always go with the stock 6 cyl radiator and add a trans cooler.

We - No Limit - make custom aluminum rads for the F-1, and can configure the in/out for you. These are crossflow design, and they bolt in to the stock core support, but do not look stock. They run about 390.oo, and we do not put the trans cooler in them, it makes them run hotter. Use a seporate cooler. They can easily cool up to 450 hp. If your not going that far, Cal. radiator makes a nice stock replacement for around 250, and offers it set up for ford W.

Still got that flathead radiator around, Vern? If so, I've seen a couple guys use it by inserting a rubber expandable core plug into the two unused hose ports to seal them off. Slightly cootie-bobbed, but effective and economical if your flattie radiator is in nice shape. If that's more than you can bear, a radiator shop should have no problem cutting off the ports and patching them.

Here's an example courtesy of jpb222's F-1 with a 200 6 cyl.:

I have a rad from a mid 70s dodge truck that fits nice. Comes with a trans cooler. The lower hose is on the wrong side so I took it to a rad shop and they switched it for me.I think the rad and the repair cost around 250.00 total. If you dont want to switch the port an older 302 water pump will bolt right up to your block and has the intake on the other side. The only proplem with this is the pump shaft is located a little lower in the casting and the water pump pulley may hit the crank pully. Experimenting with pullys would fix this proplem. If you go to Spectras web site you can search there and get pics and demensions.

Most of the Mustang radiators I'm seeing on Ebay have the lower water outlet on the passenger side instead of the driver's side. What engine application is your 68 Mustang radiator made for (390 perhaps?) and what is the total width including the side brackets? I measured the core support and it looks like something 24-26 inches wide would be ideal...

Rage,

Thanks for the suggestion but that's a little too cootie bobbed for my taste.

Besides, I want to run a modern pressure cap around 12-15 pounds...

I've seen some nice ones, with electric fans incorporated, on some of the mid 90s mini vans. I haven't taken my tape measure with me to a yard yet to make sure but I'm also putting a 302 in my 52. A v6 mini van radiator with their tiny openings in the front should be able to keep a mild 302 cool just fine.

The core measures 20 1/4 wide by 17 tall. Came from a mustang with a SBF. The mounting brackets fit just inside the stock f1 radiator mounting bracket. My engine is a 289 and the water pump outlet is on the passenger side. Check out 69 or 70 stangs as I think the outlet moved to the drivers side. You can go to one of the major radiator websites and pick a vehicle and will give you the dimensions of the radiator.
