*HELP* 1998 F-150 4x4 4.6 v8 Transmission Question!!!

I have a Short-Bed Single Cab 1998 F-150 4x4 4.6 v8 with ~230,000 miles on it. I recently blew up the my 4R70W transmission (Which is what kind of transmission i think i have). I plan on buyin a new transmission, but it's a 4R70W AODE. I dont know ANYTHING about vehicles.

My question is: Do i have a AOD or AODE transmission? I have overdrive with the push button on the shifter if that helps any. And how do i find out if you can't help? I looked for numbers on the transmission but had no luck. Any kind of help would be greatly appreciated.

You have a 4r70w. The older versions were called AOD then AODE. Just make sure it came out of a 98 f-150 or if it is new, just ask if it is compatable with your truck. I think a trans out of a 97 would work also but not positive. Where is the new trans coming from??

Its coming from a 2001 f-150 super crew w/o 4x4. And that leads to another question: Would the 4x2 transmission work in my 4x4 truck and still be able to use my 4x4? If not, how would i get it to work using the same transmission?

You will have to swap the tail housings from the transmissions to bolt up your t-case. I also believe that the wiring is different between the two transmissions but would wait to see if someone else chimes in on that.

If the wiring was different...What would it take to make it match up to my existing wiring? A new harness or something or is it more complex than that? And is there any specific specification i should look for when buying a new tail houseing? And thanks for your quick response.

If I remember correctly, the internal tailshaft is different on the 4x4 transmissions, and just swapping the tailhousing will not allow the t-case to work.

You have to have a replacement that has all the correct speed sensing back to the Computer.
They changed as the model years progressed.
For info only, an AOD cannot be considered because it is not an electrically controlled transmission.
Some internal AODE/4R70 parts will interchange into the old AOD but the trans cannot be used in PCM controlled vehichle.
If you try a conversion using a later model, be sure the person doing it knows what to do or you will get into a hassle.
Good luck.
