I'm trading in my ram 1500 hemi on a f250 SD 6.2L with 3.73 gears. I tow a 31ft 8000lbs TT loaded. My hemi pulled it ok but the stability factor was concerning. Do u think I made a good choice n will I notice a difference?

 

not apples to apples.


I went from a Dodge 1500 with a 3,500 pound travel trailer 20 foot
to my 2012 F 250 6.2 and pulling a 8,500 pound travel trailer 30 foot.
both with there own WD systems.


the Ford was much easier to control and drive... but more Firm of a ride.
but I have trailer and Camper packages.. stronger springs...in the Ford.


just to add. mine is 2 wheel drive and its an "XL" so lightest of the F 250 with the most carrying capacity, so Empty, it rides hard.
my last trip .. over the Cat scales.. was 16,800 pounds.. I had 2,000 pounds in bed of truck.


truck, motorcycle, tools, generator and Trailer.. 16,800 pounds rolling. and I averaged 9.2 to 9.8 mpg with WV,V, NC hills.

I can't answer your question directly based on experience, but I suspect you will notice some improvement in stability.

You will absolutely notice a difference. But you may not be happy towing that much weight with a gasser.

 

It will be better. Use tow/haul mode and you might even try cruise control on the flats.

I'm towing 4k more than you, with the same drive train (6.2 gas and 3.73's). It will tow it fine. You will be fine. Enjoy your new truck.

 

Do the 6.2 have alot more power than the 5.7? My hemi had the 3.21 gears 8 speed now going to the 3.73 gears 6 speed????? Like I said I'm going for the stability. My 1500 would be thrown around in crosswinds pretty badly.

 

if I was a betting man, and I'm not, I'd wager that:


1. you'll feel like you have a reduction in horsepower, because you do


2. you'll feel like you have an increase in stability, because you do.


8,000 lbs with the 6.2 should feel fine, IMO.


once you get the "first to the top of the hill" syndrome out of your head, I doubt you'll care much.


to wit: guess what the first guy to the top has in common with the last guy to the top -- they both made it to the top. at the end of the day, that's what counts. I'd rather get to the top every time, than be the first one every time.


diesel guys .... uuuugh. complain about spinning a gas engine at 4,000 rpm, but are happy to spin their diesel at 2,000. what's the diff? both are in the upper 2/3 of their rpm range ... i'll never get it.
