86 F150 4x4

Hey guys I just bought a 1 owner 1986 F150 4x4 302 efi aod tranny with 84,000 original miles on it. My question is when will the timing chain need to be replaced? I have heard that small block timing chains need to be replaced around 80,000 to 90,000. Is this true?

It depends a lot on how the truck was driven.

I would suggest that if it's running ok to just leave it alone. Put a timing light on it and see if the mark stays consistent. If it jumps around a lot, then I would suggest changing the chain and gears if you feel up to it.

"If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

The truck runs like a top. When I stop at a light, I half to turn the radio down because I can't even feel it running! The previous owner used the truck for camping and that was it. The bed does not have one dent in it.

Alot of people get atleast 200k from the timing chain. It's fine.

Mine was still the OE plastic/phenolic unit at almost 300k, but I wouldn't recommend it. The rule of thumb from most mechanics is 100k on a ford. When you do put one in, get it for a 93? and up, it is a double row roller chain for cheap.

Yes, very nice.

The only thing that would bug me is that fact that you have a chrome front bumper and a painted back bumper.

Yeah I don't like the black bumper either. Eventually I am going to repaint it that argent silver/gray color that Ford uses on their plain-jane trucks.

I personally like the look of the 80-81 F100 and Bronco rear bumper best.

Here is what I have on my F250:

IMO I always liked the rear step bumpers better. Easier access since the truck will be more of a "work" truck hauling hay and horse trailers and such.
