Third gear in an automatic

In a 06 V-10 350 auto. I went to move the truck in the garage. I put the tranny in third instead of drive where I normally use by mistake. When I hit the pedal it seemed like it started off in a lower gear. I went back to 'D" and it was just as usual. I tried it again in third and it felt like it's a lower gear. Is the first gear lower starting off in third? I've had the truck about a month with no issues.

It started off in a higher gear....3rd. If you put it in "3" it will not take off in 1st gear.

I dont know that i agree... It isnt a manual valve body... Its the Auto matic, so its the Torqueshift.

I am going to try it with mine tomorrow, and will report back.

I sometimes make the same mistake and notice it when I am driving and rpms are to high. It still starts off on 1st gear though, just wont shift past where I have the shifter.

it will always start off in 1st no mater ware you put it. except revers of course. the reason you can put it in a different gear is so it wont go above that gear.

That's wrong!

Ford's standard is that if the shifter is in 2 or 3 those are the only gears the transmission will use. In 2 it will start and stay in 2nd gear. In 3 it will start and stay in 3rd gear.

I think some people are fooled by the torque converter. It's not nearly as obvious by feel which gear you are in as it is with a manual tranny.
