What is the significance of gears being noted as "Thick?"

Dave,
I have 4.88 in the Jeep. The rear is a high pinion dana 60 made by currie and the gear is 'thin'. The only reason I know of for this requirement is fitment. I'm thinking in relation to the pinion. For real answeres call Opie at Randy's Ring and Pinion. He will explain everything. If you feel up to it, tell him I sent you. I just placed a $1200 order for the Jeep. He works out of the Washington state warehouse so consider time zones.

I just came upon a ring & pinion set that has a warranty disclaimer for tires over as certain size for a particular installation.
Details at http://www.ringpinion.com/ProductDet...px?ProdID=7979
Makes me wonder now about my 35.4" tires and which brand of hardware to be looking at, and brands to avoid.
I see that Yukon Gear & Axle says "Yukon exclusively uses 8620 steel in all their Ring & Pinion sets for high strength and long life."

hi there Matt
Dave's "not here, man"
My head is immersed in differentials and ring & pinions.
Trying to figure this all out so I can get the stuff ordered by this Friday.
Based on the advice from the guys, I figure I'll spring for everything so long as I don't max out my card.
I take it that I really shouldn't sit pat with the existing gearing and larger tires.
From what I gather I could be over-stressing my ring & pinion, but I don't know for sure.
Better to err on the safe side, and pay for the upgrade now versus after I grenade my differentials.

Now I'm trying to sort out 'fitment' as in "Carrier" whatever a 'carrier' is?
Dana 70 (rear) 10 Bolt Cover, 5/8 Pinion Off Set = 4.56 & Numerically Higher
Yet OEM installed is 4.10.
Dana 60 (front) 10 BOLT COVER
R&P Fit 4.10 & Numerically Lower Case
Yet I have found reverse cut rings numerically higher than 4.10

I think I have rediscovered the "locking positraction" differential.
What do you guys have to say about the Richmond Gear's Powertrax units?
