93 Rangers brakes locking up ...
My 93 rangers brakes are locking up and causing it to slide. It would only do this when it was wet, but now it's doing it when it's dry. If you hit the brakes pretty hard at a slow speed the fronts are locking up. If you are coming up to a stop light or sign and you push the brake it will lock up the rear wheels and it just slides. It's too dangerous to drive and I can't figure it out. Any help would be greatly appreciated .....

First thing I would do is adjust the rear brakes. Yes I know it has self adjusters but quite often they don't do what they should. With the wheel off the ground and useing a brake spoon or a screw driver having removed the rubber plug at the bottom of the backing plate turn the star wheel up to tighten the shoes against the drum. This means pulling down on the tool you are useing. Once tight you will have to lift the adjuster lever by getting under it with a small screwdiver and back off the star wheel adjuster 12 teeth.
This should allow the wheel to be turned free. Repeat on the other wheel. What you are trying to arrive at is .010 clearence between the shoes and the drum. When they get too loose the shoes grab because of their self enegizing design and cause the lockup.
It pays to take a bit more time when doing shoe replacement to see that all of the self adjuster parts are clean and properly installed. Some guys lube the threads on the adjuster screw, I never liked to do this as grease collects dirt and the dust getting into the threads can be as bad. I cleaned them on the wire wheel and with a socket brush
and left them dry. My two cents kotzy
