Built in toolboxes on side of truck

I can remember people having and seeing pickups that had tool boxes built into the side of the box came from the factory that way anyone have a truck that has those or had them added to your truck?

There is so much room between the outside sheet metal and the bed that I want to do something with it eventually and tool boxes would be great.

Just looking for picture looked online but can't find anything don't know specific models or what they are called to get search results

It was the imports that I've seen it on. I think nissan was doing it with the frontier, and maybe the toy Tundra.

All I've seen in domestics are the utility boxes which are all aftermarket and look it. I think the Sport Trac has a box on the inside of the bed. How old are you thinking?

I've seen a couple of old chevy's like that, they were the early-mid 80's square trucks and I think it was only on the long wheelbase trucks. The old tv show "Fallguy" had a brown one like that, it had a couple of doors that opend out to storage areas in front of the tires.

Yeah there is a company in CA that builds them. But it has zero factory parts in it. The bed has 6 storage compartments 3 on each side and uses the stock body lines and taillights. The boxes cost about 7k and can get up to 10 k if you have them custom painted. The only really thing ford has done was in the 70's where it was an option to have a locking storage compartment in the front pass side of the bed.

I've seen a few of them here in CA. I'll try to remember to take pictures next time i see one. They're clearly not oem, but they do look really clean. The ones I've seen raised the sides of the bed a few inches to make more room in the tool boxes - but fit really well otherwise. If budget weren't an issue, I'd have one already. :-)

I believe you are referring to Royal Truck Body. They made a bed that was the same shape as a factory bed but Royal's had boxes built in. I believe they stopped making them a few years ago because of leaking problems. Now Reading Truck Bodies has something similar to what Royal made but it ain't cheap.

Back around 74 or 79 Ford had a small rectangular door in front of rear wheel for a tool box and the F350's had (not sure if it was an option or what) a larger part of the exterior sheet metal of the bed in front of rear tire, and that is where the spare tire was located.

Yup, Ford did the little small compartment in front of the wheelwell around 1975. Not much to the compartment (small) and it had a tendancy to get damp inside....I guess from tire splash.

I guess OK for a pair of gloves, work boots, and a couple of hand tools.

While the ads Dodge has about their's seems cool...

My concern would be what you would have to do as far as protection of anything you put in there.. much less the rattle and bang with improper sound deadening !

EVERY bump would make each item bang against the other items in there
At least that's what it does with the few things I carry in the back of my Ex...
I wrap them in cloth to minimize the rattles, etc....

Seems like a great place for a small child to ride...I mean I would only do it if the dog wanted to ride up front.
