edelbrock performer rpm air-gap under stock hood?

Can I fit an Edelbrock performer RPM air-gap manifold with a carb and short air cleaner under the stock hood with a 302 platform engine?

Thanks

According to my Edelbrock catalog, the Air gap is about 0.80 inches taller at the carb pad than the regular performer 289, which is what I put on my 302. With the performer and a holley carb, and a regular sized air cleaner, I had to cut my hood. I would say that you won't have room, but I could be wrong.

I would agree. Space is at a premium on these things. The Edelbrock 2121 is actually more suited for a 4x4. A normal 3" after market filter will still dent the hood. You need a drop base filter and I use a K&N Extreme which is only 2 5/8". This is unless you have a body lift.

I can tell you from experience from putting engines in my rig.....

without a body lift on a truck with a wide distributor cap:

The Edelbrock performer will fit under the stock hood using a holley four barrel and a short 2" K&N filer and a 360 top... you need the 360 top to get adequate CFM of airflow... under the hood provided you do not use a "wing" nut or decorative top nut and you trim the center and right side (when looking at it with the hood up) of the central hood support bar. if you want the exact part number for the air filter combo... can give them to you.

If you have cast iron cylinder heads the performer will be close to a port match for the stock heads... which means that is the intake you will want to use for optimal performance.

If you are using aluminum heads you might be in a situation where the ports of the stock cast iron manifold or the performer are too small.... the manifold will not cover the ports on the cylinder heads when installed... you will have to use the Performer RPM... which also comes in an airgap configuration.....

If you are in this situation you will need a fiberglass hood, or go cheap and get the fiberglass hood scoop.... and don't cut the hole in the center of the hood... then engine sits to the passenger's of the engine compartment.

thought i'd throw in my two cents worth. just trolling through from the IDI diesel section and this caught my eye. had a '70 with a "built" 302 that had an edelbrock performer manifold, a holley 650 single pumper and a two inch aftermarket 14" diameter breather assembly. it was tight, but the hood shut without hitting the brace on the air cleaner. don't remember the model no.s off the air cleaner though.

Edel. RPM will not work & a 289 will just tight. Make sure you have good motor mounts. It will rise on ya & dent the hood. I have both the 69 1/2 cab fits fine just real tight. Need an Edel triangle sponge.
