Bad ticking - probably not exhaust

I've been told that these 5.4 engines have a manifold stud problem but I dont think this is the case here. Its an 06 3v engine and it ticks something mean all the time. cold or hot it sounds really bad. And is worse for the 4 seconds of low oil pressure right after an oil change. The dealer mentioned a camshaft something and it is very costly to fix? ever heard? Can these engines have valve adjustments or bent pushrods maybe?

The 4.6/5.4 engines don't have pushrods, they're OHV engines. Sounds to me you have a valve out adjustment, or it could be the engine is being starved for oil. Could be a weak oil pump, the pick up tube could be clogged with very little oil getting through. Is the sound more on the top of the engine or the bottom end? If it's more on the bottom end, then you could talk about the crankshaft, bearings, etc.

Has it been run hot, does it sound like a rattle or a knock in the motor. I still think from what you said in your 1st post it has something to do with oil pressure. The engine's not getting enough because it's either clogged or a weak oil pump. It would rattle when it's not getting enough oil.

Is there a way to test the oil pressure just at home here? or does it need the expensive touch of the dealer? I dont assume its a seasy as a mechanical gauge?

I'm not sure on that, I've never heard of being able to check oil pressure. That's not to say it can't be done. If you post that question on the top of this forum on the 2003 to 2007 trucks someone there probably can answer that better than I can.
