Need a new ZF extension housing

I recently got an entire F350 just like mine for a great deal. It has the 460 ZF5 I've been looking for but there is one major problem. The trans mounts on the extension housing totally broke off. Probably cause one of the motor mounts was completely gone. Anyway, it's a Zf-42, and I'm wondering what other extension housings will be the same. Do I need a 460/diesel one or will any small block version work too? It's a shame because the rest of the trans is in great shape. It's 4x4. Thanks.

I feel your pain--the PO of my truck left his hubs locked in while turning, on pavement, after pulling one of his heavy race boats. TWICE. He said he heard his first attempt at welding the ears back on "pop" when he snapped them off the second time. He welded them again (not so well, by his own admission, with a MIG) but my research has indicated that cast aluminum must be TIG'd, not MIG'd.

I was quoted about $300. for the extension housing and about $900. in labor--I was considering doing it myself but not after screwing with an injured shoulder for 8 months. So far, the welds are holding....

Or, to put it more succinctly--SUBSCRIBED!

Yeah, I'm just wondering if the two versions are the same, I can find the smallblock versions for cheap from a junkyard near me.

If these are so weak, does anyone think it would be a good idea to just come fabricate a new mounting system using the tcase mounting flange and bolts? It doesn't look like it would be all too hard and from the research I'm doing it looks like it could be stronger than the stock setup anyways.

the extension housing is the same between the small block and big block ZF5. The only differences in the 2 are the bell housing, and most of the 42 had wide ratio gears, while the 45 had close ratio.

Both the S5-42 and S5-47 were available with wide and close ratios. The gas models should have the wide ratio, and the diesels could have either.

The part number for the extension housing should be listed in one of the documents found here: http://www.zf.com/na/content/en/impo...t_Catalog.html
