Turbo pedestal leak

My 99 PSD is leaking oil again. I believe that it is coming from the turbo pedestal o-rings AGAIN. Ford fixed this a couple of times under warranty and now it is leaking again. This truck only has 53,000 miles on it. It has only been driven about 7,000 miles since the last time that Ford fixed it.
I am going to fix this myself this time. I have put the Banks turbo housing and wheel (we all make mistakes) on this truck when it was new so I know how to get it apart and back together.
Is there anything that I should look for when I have this apart to maybe find out why it keeps leaking?????????
Are there any other parts that I should change to keep this from happening again?
Is the Banks wheel comparable to the "wicked wheel"? I still get some turbo surge at higher boost (26 lb) when pulling a heavy load.

Thanks, Kevin

How bad is your leak? Does it start small and grow over time? Maybe they're just not tightening the turbo bolts tight enough. I've read where some guys developed leaks following the factory torque specs and needed to tighten it up just a hair more.

The banks wheel is the same as the wicked wheel (except for the price I'm sure)

I just noticed the oil on the garage floor over the weekend. It is a small puddle (2-3 inches in dia.), but the pan has oil on the side of it.
I guess the first thing to do is check to see if the bolts are tight.

When you get in there and take off the turbo, you'll see the top o-rings, I cleaned up all around the o-ring area, used a light scouring pad on the bottom too, cleaned it up good also, bottom view.. Get a turbo reinstall o-ring kit from Guzzle http://dieselorings.com/ , their very good o-rings, made of Viton, good for bio blend fuels and low ULSD diesel..

Is the Banks housing a compressor or exhaust housing? If it's a ported compressor housing, AND you have the Banks/Wicked Wheel (yes, they're the same), you shouldn't have any surge!

Like Chris said. Recheck the torque on the bolts I had the same problem one time I torqued them back down and all was good again. If you take the turbo/pedestal back off get new o-rings and use the blue locktite on the bolts when you go back together. That will fix that part but while your there check the evbp rod they will leak also.

Don't forget to check the EBPV plunger assembly.

When we did my 38R install, my small oil leak (at the time, I had no idea what the source was) became a really big oil leak, but all the O-rings on the pedestal were sealing fine.

It turns out my plunger was the source, and it became a huge leak when we had the pedestal off and took the plunger out to clean it up.

I was lucky, Pete swapped in a van turbo which doesn't have an EBPV, so he gave me his and it solved my problem.

Start your engine and grab a flashlight. You should be able to see any oil coming from the stem of the plunger if it's leaking there.

The housing that came with the Banks kit is an exhaust housing with the new wheel for the compressor side. Will this still let it get turbo surge? Who makes a better compressor housing to stop this from happening and should it be changed?
I am not familiar with the EBPV plunger. What is it and where is it? It has been 10 years since I had that apart.

Check out Mike's picture below. See the rod/stem sticking out from the left side of the pedestal? The assembly is held in by a snap ring.

It's my understanding that the O-rings are usually the cause of pedestal oil leaks, but in my case the O-rings were fine (just replaced) and it was my EBPV plunger that wasn't sealing against the cylinder walls properly.

Here's a close-up of Adam's setup from another thread:

As you can see, he has a little bit of an oil leak himself.

I had the same problem the ebv is what the problem will be and your best bet would be to eliminate it is to remove the ebv plunger there are instructions on the net how to do it doesnt take that long i tried replacing my pedistal twice it lasts for a while then it goes to **** so i blocked it off and it works fine now

Welcome to FTE hopalukjj. You're right, that's one way to fix the leak and not have to worry about it coming back again. Just be sure to unplug the EBP sensor when you do this.

Do you have to take the turbo off to get to this EBPV plunger to fix it or see if it's leaking?
