Good morning,
I went out to my truck to clean it this morning and I noticed the back seat top and bottom are wet. Then I look at the headliner and when I ran my finger down it water poured out. I am thinking either the rear window is leaking or it's the 3rd brake light issue, but when I did a search all the people with this problem were driving 04-05's. Is this still a problem with the 06's? I am already out of warranty so I am planning on pulling it apart and running some silicone down the light today. I just hope it isn't the rear glass. Any ideas?

 

Sure does sound like the 3rd light problem. You might try using sealant around the wires and the screws only before sealing all the way around the light.

 

.... or move to Arizona where it rarely rains. Ha. Sorry I know this probably isn't helpful.

 

I had the same issue on my 04, i called ford and got a foam gasket for the light no leaks since. You could use a LIGHT coat of rtv but its a bitch getting it back off lol

 

I called ford and was told I had to buy the whole light assembly as they didn't sell just the gasket...
Went to the hardware store and bought a box/roll of a flexable putty like gasket material and haven't had a leak since.

 

My truck had the same problem last year.Ford knows about this and the fix is a new gasket.My dealership uses an outside glass company to do this work.The glass tech said the OEM gasket shrinks and allows water in past the gasket.Mine has yet to leak since the new and improved gasket was installed.

 

When I called about a year, maybe year and a half ago, there was no "replacement" gasket mentioned. Just buy the whole light/gasket kit....

 

When your truck is still under warranty Ford will "find" a way to fix any problems.I watched the glass tech work on my truck.I even saw the new gasket he used;it was in a Ford marked package.

 

Well I tried the silicone trick and it still didn't seal. I think the plastic itself is cracked so I am going to have to order a new lamp anyway. I appreciate the help, I just didn't think this was a problem with the 06 and newer trucks.

 

My company purchased about 6-8 new 08 XLs last year and "ALL" of them had a leaking 3rd brake light.I don't know if they had them fixed yet but I hope Ford fixed the problem with the 09s.

 

It's pouring this morning in Dallas and I just noticed I still have the dreaded "3rd BRAKE LIGHT LEAK SYNDROME"...
If I don't work this weekend looks like I will replace coil boots/springs (another thread), drop driveshaft (still, another thread) and replace 3rd light gasket (again).
Anyone know the part number to said "gasket"???

 

My 04 has the same problem but only when parked uphill as far as I know. My 8 yr old was getting dripped on when I left my truck parked that way. I also am interested in finding out what the part number is for this gasket or how to order it.

 

Don't know about the gasket, I broke the plastic removing it so I had to order the whole light. Plus, I siliconed it on top of the gasket. I ain't getting caught with a wet back seat again.

I just talked to my dealer and they said to fix the problem I need to buy the whole assembly. Light housing, gasket and drip pan (???). Over the phone they said it will fix it. But for how long??

When the glass tech did mine I saw him remove my light,gasket,and use some kind of cleaning solution to clean the lens and the area it mounts to.Then,he pulled a new gasket from a Ford marked package and put it all back together.
