Ifs in a 1950 pickup

Hey there, i'm building up a 1950 F-3, i want to put a big block ford in it, what would be my best option for indepenent front suspension that will handle a 460? I'm just curious, just trying to get things in order to start the project. thanks for any replies.

Welcome to the site!

So that’s a one ton? I think the fenders are bigger and the wheel opening are larger then a half-a ton so you need a bigger wheel (or change the fenders) to make it look kina right…….. Nice set of 20 inch……..maybe?

I am not aware of anyone putting a 460 in one of our trucks with a Jag IFS. Someone asked about it a while ago. I suspect that you will want to offset the engine to the passenger side to get clearance at the pinion for the rack. A front sump oil pan could also be a problem. The exhaust manifold (extractor) on the drivers side will be a real challange unless there is a log style 460 manifold (I am not schooled on the 460). I have not personnaly seen a 460 in one of our trucks with IFS. I am sure that someone has done it but I have not seen it. Julie, julies cool f1", has a 390 in her truck and if I remember correctly she planned on a M2 and went back to the original beam.

I also have not seen a 460 / Jag setup and would prefer not to, I have to protect myself from viewing violence.

But there are many 460 / Mustang II installations on 48 to 56 trucks. Rear sump oil pan, Sanderson custom headers, and no steering shaft interference (?) Good to go!

thanks those are some great ideas, as far as the fender openings go i'm gonna have to look into that when the time comes, kinda gotta get it rolling first if you know what i mean. I did some more searching on the internet and read through some articles on this site, and i kinda like the idea of using a mid to late 70's thuderbird, cougar or lincoln front frame, and just using the whole front frame out of it. That way if i can find something that had a big block in it with rear steer i won't have to worry about steering shaft clearance, i could just order headers for that year and make of vehicle and it should be able to handle the weight and power of a big block. So that's kinda what I have in mind now, probably alot of work but i figure if it's worth doing once it's worth doing right the first time. Let me know what you guys think of that idea, thanks.

If you want to keep it heavy duty, try a 73 - 87 chev 3/4 or 1T. (don't hate) it will need a spacer on each side, but it can be bolted in. you will need to fab a steering box mount. Track width is 62", a bit wider than stock, but OK for a one ton. Lots of room for big motors, but you will still need to change to a rear sump pan.
