PureOne 24651 vs.Motorcraft FL-820S

I know this was done a while back (couple of years) at
http://www.frankhunt.com/FRANK/corvette/articles/oilfilterstudy/oilfilterstudy.html

I just could not take it at face value, so I had to cut apart one of each of these filters and see for myself. Since these filters are specific to my vehicle, it left me without any doubts. Here is what I found:

1. Both filter media appear to be the same as far as color, smell, appearance, construction, but the Motorcraft filter element is slightly longer while the PureOne has a few more pleats.

2. Both backplates appear to be identical in every respect, while the silicone drainback valves are identcal except for a slight difference in color.

3. FL-820S has the bypass valve at the backplate end of the filter, while the PureOne has the bypass located at the domed (closed) end of the filter.

4. Quality of construction is very good for both filters, fit of components is very good, and both are very clean inside the filter can and everywhere else.

I have been using both filters, but mainly the FL-820S lately. From now on until I see something else to change my mind, I will stick with the Motorcraft. They are about half the price and should do as good a job, plus the bypass valve is where Ford specifies it should be. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for sharing. I will always buy a Motorcraft FL400S for my 3.0 because of the reasons you mentioned.

Good job of research. Thanks for sharing!
I noticed one of the comparisons you made about the filter media was by smell. I guess it must be a guy thing, because I do that too! The wife thinks sniffing things it's disgusting! But to me it helps identify some things that you are otherwise unable to compare. I confess, I smell the motor oil at oil changes. Each brand has it's own unique odor. It's probably not good for me, but I'm sure not as bad as what I breathed everyday when I worked in the oilfields.

Great work- near identical high-efficiency paper media with bypass valve on the right end, plus cheaper too ....stick with Motorcraft!

Jake,
thanks, that was some good info. Like many others, I believe when considering price and quality, the Motorcraft is hard to beat.

That was the impression I had also, both from outside appearance and previous filter studies. My intention was to satisfy my own cutiosity as to what the differences between these two filters are. No doubt in my mind that Purolator made this Motorcraft filter...Ken.

I'm glad you didn't take studies "as law". Many of the oil filter studies have some erroneous or outdated info. For instance, in the SHO artticle, Mobil's multipass efficiency is really based on SAE J806 test, not J1858 as stated. Another study lists Purolator's Pure One as a synthetic element, when it actually is paper media. Another lists Champion and STP filters as a thin, easily torn paper element, when in fact, it has been upgraded to a good synthetic blend media.

Like I had mentioned, the previous studies had been done a while back. With the way things change nowdays I just had to see for myself. I wish I had some money to do the Mobil1 and K&N filters. Maybe I can do that later, just to satisfy my curiosity...Ken.

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Oct-02 AT 08:48*PM (EST)]Motorcraft on my Ranger (and daughters "Es-quirt"), for above mentioned reasons and others - and HP - I too make use of all the senses the Good Lord 'gimme' - I "sniff" stuff, in addition to looking (thoroughly), feeling (and sorta' weighing), though I don't perform any taste tests (not yet anyway - haha ), but I have been known to give things (products) a little shake (sound\hearing) to make sure nothing internally is loose...

That's great. I love it when one of us publishes results from the real world that can be of use to us.

BTW, I like to sniff the fluids in my vehicles too. The smell of the oil or coolants can tell you a lot about what is going on. Also have a strange fondness for Hoppes, WD40, Breakfree and the like. Been sniffing tranny fluid and oil for over 30 years and I don't thunk I have eny brane damage.
