e40d forward in park and reverse
Ok guys, I've got a 94 E-150 with a 302 and the E40D. It's sat for several years and I went to move it the other day and found the tranny is in pretty tough shape. 1st gear is about the only way I can get it to move, but it takes some RPM's before it'll move. I found reving the motor several times gets things moving the best. Once moving I'm sure it's slipping and doesn't seem to shift if I move the gear selector. Then, when place into reverse or park, reving the motor will tries to move forward. I spoke to a local tranny expert and he said it sounds like some of the clutch packs or something, can't recall exactly what he said, got welded together internally by some sort of failure.
Before going the rebuild route, my local salvage yard has two E40D's at a great price. One's behind a 302 and the other is behind a 351, but I was told have the same bell housing pattern. The fluid in the 302 is nice and red and doesn't smell burnt while the 351 tranny is in a 3/4 van with no fluid. I talked to the guy who brough the 351 van in and he said he drains the fluids before scrapping them. He said the van had high miles, but the tranny seemed great in it. I'm at a dilemma as to which tranny to try first. No history on the 302 tranny, but full decent looking fluid and high miles and drained fluid on the 351 tranny. I'm a little worried about the 351 tranny sitting empy and possibly beginning to rust or dry up, but maybe it's not a concern.
I'd appreciate any help or input on which tranny would be the better candidate as I'm going to get one picked up tomorrow and start swapping them.
thanks for the help

That's an excellent way of putting it, hopefully I'll get lucky and pick a winner the first time. Looks like I'm going to try the 3/4 ton 351 tranny, hopefully it'll have extra clutch packs from the factory or if nothing else, it's a 1996 and I've read something about a 1995 update change in the e40d that makes a decent improvement.
