Power range of the V-10

I have a 2009 V-10 and wondered at what RPM it makes the most HP and torque? Also what Rpm's would be the most efficent for gas mileage while tooling down the highway? I have a F-350 w/ 4:10's. Thanks...

Horsepower (hp @ rpm) 362 @ 4750
Torque (lbs.-ft. @ rpm) 457 @ 3250

That is from Ford's website.

So between 3250-4750rpm is where the power is at.

For gas mileage on the highway, I'd guess, like most any car, anything above 55mph will lower your mpg's. Not saying you should go 25mph slower than everyone else (since everyone seems to do 80mph at the least on the interstate these days) but the faster you go, the more power (and fuel) it takes to do it.

BTW, I'm new here and not familiar with the "truck world" so anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong somehow on this.

Thanks for that info but I was wondering if cruising at 70 or cruising at 60 MPH will make that much of a difference in mileage? I haven't had mine long enough get into the nitty gritty. When I bought it I wasn't worried about the gas mileage but would like to know from experience what the difference the crusing speed would have on the MPG's.. Thanks.

It will make a good bit of difference. IIRC, every time you double your speed you actually quadruple the amount of air your vehicle displaces.

Not sure about the 3-valvers, but it was discussed a few years back how V10's with 3.73 gears on the older trucks actually got BETTER mileage at 70-75 and 60-65. Strange, I know, but a few of us found that out.

I'd say it's almost negligible, but you have to figure it out for yourself Too many variables come into play.

Well, if so then your truck made the meat of it"s tq in the rpm range your truck was in with those gears/tires etc and it was enough to more than negate the drag ie, it's "sweet spot".

Gizmo,
I have an '05 F350 V10 Crew, SB with 4.10's. I've found the best mileage at around 60-65mph at around 2000-2200 rpm. That's when not towing. Like Krewat said though, the difference in gas mileage between 60 and 75 mph is negligible (maybe 1mpg). I think that the wind and elevation out here in WY plays a much bigger factor on gas mileage.

According to my mpg calculations and scangauge 60 will get better mpg than 75 by far. Of course there isn't a straight flat road in PA, maybe on straight flat roads it would be different. I don't really concern myself with mpg too much though, its a truck.

My 04 v-10 gets with a 3.73 rear end and 18in wheels 18 to high 19's on the highway running 68mph. In town and messing around she gets about 12. Towing a 7200 boat 13.5. Now that is driving sensible. It will get worse if you jack the truck around. Now I am running a k&n filter; Mobil 1 oil; and I have an off-road y-pipe and magnaflow duel exhaust on it. I am installing headers on this POS because of broken manifold studs but I don't have it done yet, it has only been a week project so far

The first day I bought the truck and brought it home I filled it up and drove it to work 105 miles round trip 16mpg all stock. Now that is driving with some sense. It is a 2v v10. I drove it to Myrtle Beach and got great mileage. It was the same going through the mountains as it was on the flat. With the headers on the truck I don't know what kind of mileage she is getting but the truck does have more power and it acts "according to the gauge" like it is getting better mileage. When it is running down road 65-68mph my tach is only showing 17-1800rpm's If you get it over 2000 she likes gas. It gets better gas mileage than my old durango that had a 360 and my wife had a 300c AWD hemi powered and that car never got over 17mpg.
