Broken Spark Plug

I just recently purchased an '05 F-250 with the 5.4L V8. I was doing a simple spark plug change, and the spark plug in the front of the engine driver side (cylinder #5 i believe) broke off below the threads. In other words, the threads and top porcelain end of the plug came out, but it broke just below that. I have done i little research and see that this is a somewhat common problem? Anyway, I have no idea what to do to extract the rest of the plug without losing it in the head. I would appreciate any help!

Thanks

Boy howdy.... If it were me i'd probably spray some PB Blast in the hole around the remaining plug and let that sit for about 30 minutes to an hour then get an easy out and try that way. You might have to beat the rest of the porcelin out of the plug and when your done get a vaccuum and suck what you can back out of the hole. That's what i'd try. Good luck!

Ford has a TSB on it and a removal video on the net. Ford also has a removal kit for broken plugs. I don't have a 3V so I didn't save the link to it. There are companys that now make 3V spark plugs out of 1pc so the plug doesn't break off again.

Put Champion Plugs back in. They are a 1 piece design, and will not seperate when trying to remove them. The plug number is 7989. I've had them in my truck for 10,000 miles and no problems so far. I ram Marvel Mystry Oil in my gas for a month prior to my changing of my plugs. Every plug came out very easy, not one broke. Othe people have done my method and have had great success also.

Thank you all for your responses.
I just looked at this online and it looks like it would work great. Does anyone know if it is available at any local auto part stores or does it have to be ordered online? Just looking for the fastest way to get it.
Thanks

oh and the website i found it on was etoolcart.com for $82.09

Lisle is a pretty popular company, you could probably find it local. If you are going to mail order, Amazon has it even cheaper.

this is how i've been doing it. Before your even put a socket on any of the other plugs, pop out all the coils and spray, pour about a table spoon of carb/tune cleaner in each hole and allow to sit for maybe a half hour. Then ever so slightly..barely crack the plug, less than an 1/8 of a turn, and this is very important, cuz if you crack it too much its too late and you've already cracked the plug. and allow it to sit another hour to allow all that carb cleaner to go into the cylinder and saturate all the carbon. I've even let it sit over night. Then you may attempt removal of the plugs. Hopefully you won't break any , but it seems i always break one or two. Then follow direction on tool. Good luck. I've done more than 10 sets in the last year.

Hey everyone. Good news and bad. I used the tool today and it worked great on that plug! The bad news is that the two plugs behind that broke in a different way. The ground electrode shield AND the center porcelain piece were left in the hole and only the nut portion came out. I've read that you need to use a needlenose to break the center porcelain off so you can use the tool? I'm not having much luck with that approach. If anyone has any other ideas please help!

Thanks!

I think that Ford was telling people to super glue a welding rod or something simular to pull the porcelian out. I read where some people had success starting the engine briefly and blowing it out.
