Trans shifter cable.....

Trans shifter cable.....
Hello everyone, I am experiencing an issue with my shifter cable. It had been shifting sloppy for a week or so and I went under to adjust the cable and discovered the housing assembly at the retention clip next to the tranny is not holding the cable. The cable is intact but the housing will not stay in place when moving the shift lever. The hold-down clip appears to be fully seated but it will not hold the cable and prevent it from moving with the shifter. When moving between gears now, it will not move the linkage, however the cable slides in and out of the housing. Is there a way to hold the cable without replacing the entire cable?
My truck is a 99 Explorer XLT, 4.0 SOHC.
Thanks!!

I was adjusting the bands on my 2000 explorer and the tourqe wrench slipped and I snapped the plastic housing but not the cable in the same place that you are talking about. I tried to use Gorilla Glue but no luck and the entire cable around here is $ 103.00 so it looks like I am spending some quality time this weekend in my favorite junk yard!
