The problem is that those of you with the money only seem to buy a house here and come visit every once in a while. All that does is raise property values until we can't afford anything. If you'd come up here and start a business with all your extra money and employ a few dozen Montanans we probably wouldn't mind y'all so much. Then you'd really be contributing to the economy, instead of just pretending like you do us good by spending a few bucks here every year.

This is really getting this thread sideways now, but how does buying houses at the advertised/market effect your property value? Things are priced where they are before we buy?
Also - you're bitching about raised property values? I guess if you can't afford to buy yet I get that, but the people selling us the homes and those in the areas we are buying that are keeping there homes don't seem to mind

You're right. They don't mind. Well, actually they do, but they're so desperate for cash that they'll sell to whomever. I work construction here and I make all my money from outsiders moving here but it's a double-edged sword. The state raises property taxes with the raise in property value, so it does affect those whose have houses. The influx of people leads to greedy people jacking up the prices of everything because they know they can get it. Those of us here can't make a good wage no matter what profession we're in, so we all stuggle with trying to make ends meet. Why do you think I was in CA the last 2 years and will be going back there in Dec? I'll never even be able to pay off my student loans if I stay here and work, nonetheless buy a house.

Does Montana not have a law that fixes property taxes at what they are when you buy the house (unless you make upgrades, etc. raising the value)?
California does for the very reason you mentioned. Before the law passed people were getting forced out of their homes due to values rising and property taxes going up with that. The poeple had bought long ago and for cheap, and the property taxes soon cost a lot more than the mortgage - making it so people couldn't afford to stay ni their homes. My grandparents and great grandparents left homes in Newport Beach due to this. Unfortunately the law passed the year after they moved
Double edged swords are the way of life. There is currently a development on the last undeveloped plot of bechfront in my area. I grew up surfing this beach and NEVER wanted this place to be built on. I am now working on 6 houses in this area and one of my houses is the 1st one to be finished and sold. I hate the fact that they developed this are, but the fact is that working on this stuff has paid my bills for the last year
