Our experience has been that when properly stored and cared for, most street tires have a useful life in service of between six to ten years. And while part of that time is spent as the tire travels from the manufacturing plant to the manufacturer's distribution center, to the retailer and to you, the remainder is the time it spends on your vehicle.

Tire Tech Information - Tire Aging – Part #1
Not to hijack the thread, but they're talking about tires purchased today. NOT ten years ago.According to the article, ten years ago, tires were designed to last four years and 60K miles. We're a far cry from that now.

Here's some food for thought. A week before this picture was taken, the truck was inspected. A COMPLETE, THOROUGH inspection. The wheels were pulled, brake linings, wheel cylinders, shocks, and tires were checked. Suspension bolts tightened, ....everything! It was in tip top shape. The tires had no dry rot, not a single crack in any of them. The truck was stored indoors most of it's life. They had deep, like new tread. While driving around a corner on a sunny, clear day on dry pavement, the tires lost grip from the road. The driver counter steered several times and then panicked and let completely off the throttle. This compression locked the back tires for just a second sending the truck into a spin and flipped the truck 2 1/2 times when it went off the road. Old rubber crystallizes and becomes hard. The elasticity is gone and it no longer sticks to the road.

You can leave your old tires on your truck or car. When they hit 6 or 8 years old, that junk is coming off my stuff. This was my truck, by the way. My ex (who was one mean drivin' chick) rolled it. I rebuilt the truck to better than new from here, but I refuse to do it twice for the same reason.
