HUH???

This no more looks like the stock radio from a 1961/66, than a radio from a 2009!

It's from a 1949/50 Ford passenger car...and to top it off, it's 6 volts.

The original radio has no pushbuttons, the bezel mounts to the outside of the dash, the radio chassis mounts behind the dash.

1961/66: The dash has three small holes in it, two for the knob shafts, one for the bulb's wire.

The nuts on the knob shafts are what holds the bezel onto the chassis.

If you cannot find a pic of the original radio in a 1961/66, look at 1966/77 Bronco's...same radio.

Since we're on the topic of sound systems, the dash in my 66 has already been cut but a PO. He installed a POS aftermarket AM/FM/CD that is too deep for the dash. It hits the wiper motor. Thus it required a face adapter that causes it to stick out about 1.5 inches from the dash. It looks like crap IMHO. So, if I buy a better unit, what kinds of units have you guys used that fit flat against the dash and still clears the wiper motor?

As for your situation, Murrmeister, I've seen a small head unit mounted to one side of the glove box which still leaves plenty of room for the insurance & registration papers to be stored in there beside it. Of course there won't be room for that extra tool kit, jack handle, six pack or whatever else normally get stuck in the glove box...LOL! The unit is then controlled by a small remote that you can keep somewhere close to the driver's seat. Just a thought.....hope it helps.

I think i'm getting close to what seems like the best option.... i happen to have the camper special so, i do have a tool box on the side of my bed for a flashlight, etc.

I measured the distance from the face of the dash to the wiper motor and found it to be about 6 1/2". There are a number of decks out there that are only 6 1/8 - 6 1/2 and i bought a Kenwood 130DEHP4HD with the dash mount in mind. You should not have trouble finding a much shallower deck than your current one. My particular deck is available used and in the box all over ebay for about $95.

I've since changed my mind and will mount it in the glove for a few reasons: 1) because it comes with a remote control and 2) it has a rear aux input so i can run an ipod jack behind the dash over to somewhere convenient around the steering column and 3) I always wanted a good excuse to buy one of the zippered door storage pockets. I'm going to find some small speaker boxes and mount the main speakers under the seat and then put some smaller speakers under the dash and out of sight.

Haven't done it yet, but this sounds like the best overall compromise.

Thanks for everyone's input....can't say enough good things about the wealth of experience here.

Murray

PLEASE, FOR GOD SAKE....DON'T CUT THE DASH!!!

IMHO, leave the stock radio in there and use the remote type. You can get a much better sound system and not have to gut a wonderful Slick in the process.

If my truck hadn't already been hacked (God I shoulda taken pictures for you guys!) SOOO HORRIBLY I wouldn't have put my Alpine deck in the dash, but, alas, as a musician I NEED music while I'm driving, and in the dash makes sense, so I made a perfect hole, and slid the deck in.

I bought new door panels for someday, I'll buy a glove box door, and put the original AM back in at the same time, but for now... It gets to have good music, easy to reach and use (Plus I need the glove box for hiding my iPod! )

There are a few places like this one that will take your am and leave it factory looking but make it all digital inside and include a ipod/sat hook up

Antique Automobile Radio, modern stereo for vintage cars

If I were restoring a numbers matching truck I would be worried about the dash cut issue. Reality is that most of us have something that is not original to the truck that required modifications which weren't factory options. Even dealers added hang-on A/C units and other items custom to the original offering. My dash had also been cut by the PO for the cassette era so a little extra opening allowed the CD mount.

37 Ford Guy, The model I have that cleared the wiper arm is a POS Pioneer. Model DEH-6 and its dimensions are 7w x 2h x 6.375d.
