badging...

My 65 F250 is trimless and basically badgeless. Whom ever owned it before removed the custom cab badging, that much we can see from inside the door as the holes have been covered.

Yes, it has a 66 grille.

When we got it home, in the glove box were two ford badges. We looked at a load of pictures and see these emblems mostly fender, but we've seen a few on the hood. These emblems are curved slightly so we're assuming they sit on the hood.

Am I correct? Is there a reason for the different placement?

The badging on 65's is the hood front badge..V8 for 352 trucks and gear and lightening bolt for the 6 cylinder trucks...this gear and lightening logo was embossed in the center top portion of the backrest on CustomCab trimmed trucks.
The hood side badging was used on the 61-4 models as it pertains to F100-350 trucks. On 65 trucks the side emblem is on the fender which has F O R D above in block letters followed by the trucks series...100,250,350.
The plastic insert varies by the model...most had Twin I Beam but there were others too...Ranger ..used on all Ranger models EXCEPT Camper Special Rangers
Camper Special was on the CS models...only offered in 2WD trucks with the double walled styleside bed. Four Wheel Drive was the plastic insert used on those trucks.
The Custom Cab exterior door badging was only used on Custom Cab model trucks...for the package composition look in my gallery as I have the full package breakdown of it as well as Camper Special on F100 and F250 models.
On the inside of the cab there is no badging at all except the seat mentioned prior and the horn button which depending on the model and type of horn ring used could be a die cast horn button with the gear and lightening cast in it or a larger diameter button used on the 4WD trucks with the same insignia. The Custom Cab models had a 3 spoke chrome ring with a small plastic insert retained to it by screws on the rear of the ring. The insert most commonly had the Ford oval in the center with 'Product of Ford Motor Company' on the outer perimeter.
On the standard models and I believe 4WD models as well the rubber floormat had the gear and lightening in the center transmission tunnel towards the front edge of it on 3 speed and automatic trucks.

The holes in the door for the name plates are tiny...approxamately 1/8 in diameter...theres 6 per door. The fender nameplates have 3 per side...about 5/16 in size...2 parallel on the top of the nameplate and one in the lower center. None of these are fastened using nuts...all use barrel clips/nuts which are a grip lock type part. These are easily obtained aftermarket. The 65 fender nameplates are unique to that year as 1966 saw them get redesigned. The 1965 fender bezels ARE NOT REPRODUCED.
There was also the chrome individual F O R D letters on the upper valance between the parking light/turn signal asseblies. These also utilized the barrel clip fastening method.

The info above is representative of the 81A and 81B model trucks...this is shown on the Warranty Plate ..or door tag as most refer to it as which is affixed to the rear left door face below the door latch.

I have a 1965 Ford F250 4x4.. there are two holes on the right fender in front of the three holes for the standard fender emblem. Could these holes have been for an additional emblem on only the right side?.. they are level and about 4 or 5 inches apart..

Ive never seen any 61-66 4x4 with extra badging on the fender. Not in pictures or up close and personal. Ive seen some people add the 390 later model truck or car badging to the fenders before. If NumbersDummy or Tripleframe see this maybe they can set us straight.

Could those extra holes be for a Napco emblem?

Someone besides the factory drilled the extra 2 holes. My guess it may have had a dealership name emblem in that location.Dealership emblems were popular in some parts of the country. Dealerships with big egos wanted everyone to know where your vehicle was purchased from.

Before 59 it might have been a NAPCO conversion. I doubt after 59 that Ford would have sent it to them to convert as they were building their own 4wd at that time. A private owner may have had a conversion done on it not likley Ford.

While FoMoCo introduced factory installed 4WD beginning in 1959 for F100/250's, customers could order 4WD conversions from FoMoCo well into the 1970's, including F350's that Ford didn't offer with 4WD until 1979.

Most of the 4WD conversions were performed by Marmon-Herrington located in Indianapolis IN

If the first 3 digits of the VIN point to a 2WD and the truck has 4WD and a 6 digit DSO code, the truck would be a Domestic Special Order.

With all the work I have done on the brakes and front hubs etc, I havent noticed anything that wopuld point to aftermarket parts. I was going to have my body shop fill in the holes but didnt want to do so if I was missing an emblem that went there. The dealer emblem my be the cause. Here is my info off the door. My gut instink with the old paint etc, is that this seems to be the original door.

Can anybody decode this?.. ND?

Warranty Number = F26DL661219
WB = 12
Color = JM
Model F260
Body = N81
Trans = N
Max GVW = 6800
Cert = 172
RPM = 4000
DSO = 422717

F26 in your vin indicates that the truck is a factory build unit and not a conversion.

Warranty Number = F26DL661219 F26= Factory four wheel drive F250
D=352 V8
L=Michigan Truck Assembly
661219= Born in the month of March 1965

WB = 12 (Missing a third digit. )
Color = JM =Red/white Two tone
Model F260=F250 6,800 GVRW
Body = N81 = Conventional Red woven plastic and red vinyl w/foam cushion A Custom Cab.
Trans = N=Four speed new process 435
Max GVW = 6800 = maximum allowable vehicle weight with load an passengers.
Cert = 172= Net horsepower for the 352
RPM = 4000 = where max HP is produced.
DSO = 422717 = Fargo North Dakota (where truck was ordered) 2717 is the special order meaning the truck was special ordered and not bought off the lot.

There should have been a spot for the axle?

All this points to the truck being a true factory four wheel drive. It is a shame the trim was removed.

Thanks Bill for updating my gray matter library. I was working off of information I had learned about this particular version of Ford truck through years of working on them. I was pretty sure you would come in and correct if I wasnt quite on the mark. Again thanks for the info always appreciated.

Garbz..Thanks so much!.. I am going to save and print this info..I have a question on custom cabs..The truck appeared to have very low use to it when we got it as it even had the floor mats that had the ford gears in the rubber and even the seat had the ford gear symbol in it...both just fell apart.. when lifted. The truck however had no signs of the custom cab things that I see on some trucks..like the emblems..and the trim. It has the round spedometer without any extra dash guages, no hazards, no metal dash trim, no outside metal trim etc. It does had a radio and the two extra heater ***** that are on a bracket under the dash...could this have been a custom order of just a few parts...and didt really make it the "custom cab". It also has that extra wire plug between the cab and the bed that made me wonder if it was a camper special..I can try and learn to post pics if you guys need to see anything..Thanks again..this is priceless info on here!! Roger
