How to get 23 mpg with a 5.4

So....on a 215 mile trip i pulled out over 23 mpg by using the cruise and driving close to the speed limit.........i guess we can't blame ford entirely for bad mileage....

What kind of fuel mileage do you get around town? 23 mpg is beyond impressive. It's down right hard to believe. Did you figure out the numbers by hand or did you just use the computer?

around town its not so good....but alot of thats my own fault....i usually average 13-15 around town but i'm not so much the slow driver most of the time....

I used the computer as i've figured it dozens of times on my truck and the computers never been off by more than .2 mpg....and i used just over a quarter tank...so its gotta be pretty close........

last summer...same week...i pulled off 21 something over 600 miles.....

and the first winter i owned this truck i pulled off a 19 on a 900 mile trip with winter blend gas and 18's (rugged trail tires).....

both of those i figured by hand and compared to the computer which were very close....

my 2007 truck does WAY better than my 05 did....best i ever got on a trip with that was 17...

I get 20 mpg with 2007 Lincoln Mark LT it have 3.73. I could hit 25 mpg if he not ride with me because he doesn't like me drive so slow to save little gas since he is pay for gas. If it hit 25 mpg then I am sell my 94 Geo tracker it get 30.5 mpg for 2,300 pounds VS lincoln Mark LT that weight close 6,500 pounds.

but Uncle get 18.7 mpg by drive at 75-80 mph on highway.

But strange his 2004 Gm envoy get 17 mpg V8.

I had the same experience with my 2008 Lincoln Mark LT, and reported it in my "Doh!! & Woah!!" thread a little while back.

If I kept cruise set to 65 MPH, I could get pretty consistent 22-23 MPG out of it. Ironically, whenever you mention that to someone crowing about their fuel economy they cry foul & spout off 800 different reasons that I could not possibly be getting that good of fuel economy. But, the fact remains that I have hand calculated everything & confirmed that the computer was never more than about .5 MPG off.

Wind & the mountains between Laramie & Cheyenne would both have their impact, but for the rest of my Colorado to Wyoming trips I got very respectable numbers.

Similar to Ryan50hrl, that drops off pretty quick in town...where I am my own worst enemy. My average in Denver was 13-14 MPG...too many heavy accelerations on on ramps, quick off the lights, etc. Oh well. I did not buy a crew cab pickup for fuel economy.

i found that it would drop a bit up the hills...and rebound on the way down the hills so they were in fact a net impact of 0

Ya, I had a 20.2 once for a 120 mile round trip, 55-60 mph, small rolling hills. Hand verified, computer was within a tenth if I remember right. I also had 8 mpg one winter. I'm lucky to pull 12 city though, wish I could improve on that.

P.s. Ryan, I keep trying to come up with an exhaust for you, but there’s always some new setback just as I get close. It’d be comical if it wasn’t so frustrating.
